Hi,
Bit of a long shot - but does anyone have an aliment tool near gatwick (home) or SE London (work) that I could borrow tonight?
Thanks,
Stu
if you cannot get one, you can fit the gearbox without an alignment tool, assume you already have removed the bellhousing from the gearbox, fit bellhousing over clutch assembly, an bolt to engineBit of a long shot - but does anyone have an aliment tool near gatwick (home) or SE London (work) that I could borrow tonight?

then either have someone keep their foot on the clutch pedal or use a piece of wood to keep the pedal depressed with the other end of the wood pushed back against the base of the seat, being carefull with the leather etc.
then you can carefully manipulate the gearbox back into place, the clutch plate wil be free to move with the clutch depressed, and it does`nt move very far off center, so with some careful movement of the gearbox you should be able to locate the shaft through the clutch plate and then into the spigot bearing, with the propshaft hanging in the back of the box you an in gear will be able to rotate the shaft to line up with the splines in the clitch plate.
just be careful not to allow the weight of the gearbox to be on the shaft at any point, so keep hold of it and you should be fine.
although a proper alignment tool is handy

Nice technique. I was going to remove the bell housing, do the clutch up finger tight (so the plates are free-ish), offer up the box (with no bell housing to be seen), then (while giving the box support), do up the clutch bolts before removing the box, and re-fitting with the bell housing attached.
The trouble is that my impact wrench broke and I need to complete tonight if I'm to use the car on the weekend. So I can't get the bell housing off without draining fluids
Its all just time.

It was a nightmare! I've spent all my free time on the car, hence the late reply.
We tried everything and couldn't get it on (or the bell hosuing off).
We then made a tool for a broom handle, spline and all
I then went to remove the clutch from the fly wheel (from previous attempts), and 3 of the 6 bolts jammed and stripped... That was at about mighnight, so I gave up for yet another night.
Early start the next day, got a tapp, re did the threads, used the tool, bench pressed the box and pro shaft up into postion (just)... Re fitted the car to limp down to sail through the MOT (the next morning). Then I just had time on sunday to install the decats, and then it was Goodwood time
Great day - but then broke down three times with a loss of powersupply. Called in help at about 11 at night, where we removed the airbox to find the alternator fuse had blown during the re-fit of the starter motor.
I'm pretty sure that we woke up the whole of Petworth once we were off again.
It was a true TVR adventure.

I did it that way. Took me 30 seconds to fit the gearbox.then either have someone keep their foot on the clutch pedal or use a piece of wood to keep the pedal depressed with the other end of the wood pushed back against the base of the seat, being carefull with the leather etc.
