blinking pinking
Discussion
I know that this has been done before but i just wanted to check as im a bit of a newbee on this forum. I must just say that im so happy with the new T350. I only had four niggles at the first service (none of them mechanical). i had towards the end of 1000 miles used a bit more throttle but got pinking at just over 3000 revs. I had been told that this was normal for the car before 1st service as the engine was settling down....etc etc.. Since the service i have been over 4000 revs and its fine if im smooth and the minimum amount of throttle is deployed..when call for a bit more ( you know you want to) in 4th and 5th the engine Pinks badly and inhibits progressive smooth acceleration. when the car is fully ruin in then i will use more RPM in 3rd, 4th so this might help but at the mo i cant go bananas. I must add that the car is not "missing"...any ideas or should i just talk to the dealers and see what they think. I must add they have been fantastic right from the word go. Any help would be appreciated as i dont want to accept it if there is even better to have. Great forum by the way with so many prominent characters. You all know who they are!!!
Thanks
Thanks
Your symptoms sound a LOT like what's happening to my Tam, sometimes I get hesitation whilsy trying to accelerate quickly, so far, the dealer's have found nothing wrong, although I'm not convinced, I am ringing up TVR Power tomorrow, (if they're open!) to see if I can book it in and get it checked out by 'experts' in the next 2 weeks, I hope!

got pinking ... the engine Pinks badly Hmm? doesn't sound right! Did the dealer say "they all do that, Sir"? Cos, just for once, I wouldn't believe 'em! I've not heard of anyone else having pinking on the latest cars...
Ok for the ignorant member of the forum can you explain pinking?
I'm no expert. Putting it in layman's terms, from a layman, who's about to lay down horizontally....
I've experienced it in bikes and car's and it seems like you come to the end of the "Grrrroar..." and start going "pinkety, plinkety, plonkety, plunk" or "tinkle, tinkle".
So - how technical did you want to get!?

Maddog... i have read your posts with much interest and admire your enthusiasm for your new toy... This wont be technical but i will try and explain.. Pinking is caused when the timing is out..i cannot remember if its when its retarded or too far advanced but basically the engine feels hesistant but still fires it does not miss. you get a kind of " tink" noise that seems to come from underb the chassis that gets more pronounced the more you depress the throttle. It seems to occur in the mid range of rpm and will be accentuated up hill or in the wrong gear. you may have heard a similar noise when pulling away in 2nd at low revs.
Hope this helps
Chris,
I did read your thread a week or so ago and thought it may be the same but unless im mistaken i thought you kinda suggested that the engine was missing and refusing to pull rather than an old fashioned "pink". Hope you get it sorted.
My problem im sure is just the timing but ive just had the first service and im sure that this should have been checked..but then the door that i flagged up still rattles..
Hope this helps

It's pre-ignition. The pinking sound is the noise made by the fuel burning in an uncontrolled "bang" before the correct firing position has been reached. If the fuel ignites too soon on the upward stroke it will try to push the piston "back down" instead of making it go round. It can happen when the engine is under heavy load and/or low revs.
Some engines have a sensor (anti-knock) which will retard Ignition Timing when it senses the shock of the 'bang'. Didn't work well on my M Roadster though at low revs!
I've never experienced pinking in 1st or 2nd in normal conditions (low load and 2k plus revs)
It is common (I am led to belive, and it happens to mine) to have pinking above 6K full throttle in 3rd on normal unleaded, so I use Super Unleaded for pink free overtaking.
I was told there is a new(er) chip (ie remap) for this also.

Thanks for the explaination. Makes perfect sense! As for the enthusiasm. Yes. Spent last night waxing and polishing, and I must say it was looking pretty good when I took it down the ACE cafe meet this evening.
Alas I appear to have developed obsesive cleaning disorder, but that said I have always had it with all cars!
Happy TVRing

When i was young i used to slam most things quite hard
but like maddog im now have to remain content with polishing and waxing most of the time. I find that Zymol makes life very easy indeed with superb results.
I think i will have a second opinion on the pinking issue.
Thanks for the response. anyone at the Mid Essex do on Sunday i will see you there!

My Tam did this quite badly... much better after dealer replaced the chip. And like has been said before, if it's not optimax (or BP ultimate seems to be fine), then it still does it a bit. Otherwise, now running like a dream!
Is that the de throttle chip, or something else?
My worry is that County TVR have ordered a new injector lead for me, but that was almost 3 months ago, if I need replacement parts, the waiting is just a nightmare!

I've had the revised chip fitted but still get pinking on high revs full load if I'm using anything other than Shell Optimax. That seems to be the solution for me at least. Hope that helps.
Yep i had the same prob badly whilst in Scotland, as i was not able to get Opimax, However the pinking went soon after filling up with Optimax or BP ultimate.

Chris,
Did you get TVR Power to have a look?
The reason I ask is that my T350 has become a pinking nightmare.
It has gradually got worse to the point where on a bad day it will pink in 2nd gear high revs and even in forth at any revs. It's killing my driving experience.
I'm on my 2rd ecu chip to retard the ignition but it's no better. 1 more to go and then that's it.
I'm beginning to think it's not a mapping issue but something mechanical/electrical or even a fuel quality problem (I'm now trying out different garages now to see if that makes a difference).

Mine started pinking after 12k service and tappet adjustment at TMS, i phoned and told them and they said they could fit a 2 degree retarded chip and that would sort it, i take it fairclp this didnt work on yours then
If your pinking sounded like "marbles down the exhaust pipe", then my cure was to go down a quiet dual carrigeway and to stay at 6500 revs (2nd gear) for 30 secs to blast all the sh8t out of the system.
Clears it for at least a 1000 miles.
Could be caused by just using standard unleaded (as I always have done as no Shell or BP nearby).
