Hi,

From hot, car running after a drive, open bonnet, turn engine off, run to front, untwist cap, pull out cap/dipstick, wipe, dip, check level...

Right, the oil level is sometimes difficult to ascertain. I've been told as long as oil on it fine.

Has anyone adapted or worked out a better method smile

Steve

P.s. mine seems to use no oil smile

cold is good, but, leave the engine running and you will get a more consistant reading. Its how several production cars with dry sumps take readings (Pork Turbos etc).

"This is my method of checking before taking the car out when COLD; with car on dead flat surface when the oil is just on the stick or just over the MIN this gives approx 3/4 of MAX."

If parked on level ground then each individual car should read consistently (but different readings of course) when the oil hot/just turned off or when the oil is cold/standing for a week. I spent a lot of time checking mine in both conditions and now know where the level needs to be when cold. I will sometimes check when hot/just after shutting down, but now look at the level during a pre-flight check.

Remove & wipe dipstick first (engine running at temperature)
wear an insulated glove so you don't burn ourself.
Get the mrs to turn it off whilst you wait dip-stick in hand
