Engine Bay Heat Shield Replacement

Has any one managed to replace the heat shield adjacent to the exhaust manifold with the exhaust manifold in situe. I have tried to pach the current split shielding with the 3M alu tape but it just keeps peeling off with the heat.
Is there a method for removal or just plain butchery. Any experiances would be helpfull.
