I recently brought a tamora and it has been de cated and has a sports back box. The car sounds great for a little while, it loud mean and constantly farting and banging on over run etched. The only problems is that's great for a little while or a test drive but after a couple of days it gets on your tits !!!

So my question is this if I put the cats and original exhaust on do I have to get it re mapped? The reason I ask is the amounts of bangs and pops it makes sound to me that the car is over fuelled .

Does anybody now who would be best to talk to near Milton Keynes to get it sorted out.

Personally I would start by putting a standard exhaust back on and leave the cats out.
Then see if you like it. The mistake is the sports box IMHO.

If you want a standard sounding car, put them all back on.

As far as I am aware you won't need to remap just for changing the exhaust. Your car might need a remap anyway. Is the tail pipe black and sooty? Are the plugs sooty?

If you need a standard backbox, I have one kicking around the garage that wouldn't cost much!

The tail pipes are a little black!!!!! I was speaking to a guy that does mapping for jag and land rover and he said from what he gathered tvr idea of sorting out running problems was to throw more fuel at it !!

I would go the other way first and take the de-cats out. That will reduce the bangs and pops and take the raspy-ness off the exhaust note when you are over 4k. Depends on who's back box you have fitted as to what sound you get too. Me I just put my ear plugs in!

Normally the noise wouldn't bother me, but it so loud that its embarrassing I'm about 20 years past having a car with a bake bean tin exhaust.

The pops and bangs are in the mapping, not the decatting.

I had my decatted car mapped by Mark Adams. At the end he said "would you like some pops and bangs?" I said "yes please" and he dialled them in on his laptop.

The decatting does make it louder and more raw. I am 60 years old and like the sound of my decatted Chimaera with standard exhaust. It is only 101 decibels at 3/4 revs, so track legal. Changing the exhaust to sleeved would be too much.

Find a few others of your car and go see what they sound like. Are you at the TVRCC track day on Monday? Shoud give you some ideas and a chance to talk to a lot of TVR owners.

Only partially agree with you there, the absence of the cats allows unburnt fuel into the exhaust (you can't get flames with the cats in). I have a std map and it pops and bangs much more without the cats out. Over fuelling by changing the AFR will also have the same effect.

I won't be at the Beds meet in Sept as I will be in the States but should be there for Oct as well as it the pigeon shoot at the end of the month. TVR's are loud period, changing the exhaust won't make that much difference under normal driving conditions, yes mine is a little louder but its only over 4k when its really loud. Last time I checked it was 125.8 db at 4k static with 96 db at idle from 1 metre.

Which reminds me, the meeting this month is on the 29th.

If I can ge this AES exhaust idea working for net year, then a similar idea might solve your issue.

personally i would swap the backbox first, as it is a 30min job. Then you can decide to put back in the cats additionally. Mine is decatted, too with a JP box and sometimes i swap to standard. Huge difference !

Have you determined the DB difference between the two? Interested in swapping mine to standard for a trip to Spa at some point. I'm well over the db limit on mine smile Heehee

popping can also be caused by air leaks into the exhaust...if youve some mods, just check theyre all tight and not leaking.

Not measured, but on standard it sounds like a loud M3 when revving biggrin , whereas with JP it sounds like hell is breaking loose....

I still have my custom full exhaust with decats and cherry bombs (tuscan S size)for my old Tamora, it makes the car sound much deeper and quieter on motorway journeys, with great pops and bangs on the over run, it added a few more HP and torque to my 4.5 along with reducing heat soak

If interested PM me

Mine was about 107db at 4500 rpm with the TVR Power Sports exhaust. The normal back box gets it down to about 101db.

The Power exhaust is sat in my garage if anyone would like to make me an offer. (PM, thanks)

Found out yesterday that my Chimaera, fully decatted but with standard exhaust, is 105.8dB at 4500 rpm. Not quiet, but pleasant to live with and I am not young. Agreed its not a Speed6, but i have a friend with a Tamora with a standard exhaust and I don't remember that being stupidly loud.
