Brake pads: Re-face or replace?

Service time in December so I am starting to think about my bucket list of jobs if the bill is not too excessive for the service. My pads are getting old ish now (5+ years). They have always been re-faced at service time, is this sufficent to keep them working as they should or do they eventually reach the end of their life and need to be replaced?

At that age I would replace.

Are you sure you mean reface the pads not discs?
