I should be receiving my TVR Power sports exhaust either this week/early next.

I was flicking though some old posts last night (My God, time really does fly, can't believe it's almost a decade since I bought my first Tam - still seems like yesterday - and seemed to be more 'bustling' back then frown!), and when I had mine fitted, Dom at TVR Power installed it, but he also did some 'trickery' with the chip/engine (not sure) to get the pops and bangs.

I thought I would try and fit the exhaust myself until I read that post. So my question is, if I fit it myself, would I then need to take it to Dom for a 'tuning' to get the right note?

Cheers smile

No, the sound with de-cats is way too harsh for my ears..

The pops and bangs largely come from the cars using batch injection rather than sequential courtesy of the MBE. Unburnt fuel is being pushed through, which is then making the banging noise.

Put the exhaust on and see how the car drives, but remappping for an exhaust is unlikely to bring any gain. Call Dom.. he'll confirm.

I didn't expect for a minute that there are gains to be had - I just like the pops and bangs a sports exhaust brings to the party.

I may just book it in for a 6k service at TVR Power and let them install it....

I just put my cans on with the decats, no need for anything else.

If you want to be proactive put new hangers on + nylocs & split pins. TBH the weight of the new cans is a lot less than the std box so it should not be a problem with stretching the rubbers. I would also fit new band clamps to clamp them on, get some decent stainless ones not cheap Chinese ste that either rusts through or seizes solid. When you fit the cans take your time to make sure the edges don't rest on the splitter or the main tub, you may need a couple of washers under the splitter to achieve this.

Thanks for the advice smile

You don't happen to have a link for the clamps you mention, do you? (I am hopeless, if I find some, they'll probably be the wrong ones...)

Can confirm the standard back box is much heavier. I'd forgot by how much until I took the sports cans off and put the standard one back. On .... For me I love the sound of the induction noise just which I could get the pops and bangs I'm definitely not missing the racket the sports boxes produce!

Not selling the sports cans tho' they'll be back on in the summer! smile

http://www.tvrpower.co.uk/store/slug/exhaust-mount-rubber/

I think they are off a VW passat, made by Bossal. Don't know if VW do them cheaper but I would suspect not. You also want Mikalor stainless band clamps, ebay will see you right for these. 55-59mm should be the correct size from memory

Cheers Andy. Have ordered a few of those clips from ebay - but knowing me, I'll probably have it fitted at TVR Power...

Its 4 nylocs for the hangers and 2 exhaust clamps, save yourself £40 and do it yourself. How hard can it be smash Its a pity you are not close to Beds otherwise I would have popped over and held the spanners for you. If you are ever over my way you will have to pop in and say Hi!

Cheers again, Andy. smile

I am actually near the border of South Wales, in the Forest of Dean, I think asking you to drive 100 miles plus would be a bit much... hehe

bd! Took everything off, rear splitter with back box cover, undone the exhaust clips - only to find that the back box is spot welded to the rear pipes!

Is this normal? What the hell can I do now, apart from putting it all back together?

Dammit!

Actually, I am an idiot.

Had a closer look using my camera and I now realise what the spot welds are for, and noticed where the end of the back box actually was..

What a tw@t!

ETA - have ordered a set of SS bolts and washers for the diffuser, as the originals are absolutely fooked.

Yep; it needs a bit of a yank the first time to get it off or a smack with a rubber mallet. Sorry, should have mentioned about replacing the diffuser bolts the other day too. The fact they came out is good, they can be a nightmare if they are completely corroded.

I actually used a lump of wood and a standard hammer on the rear of the back box, a few taps, a few wiggles and it came off surprisingly easy!

Just have to wait for the new hangers, clips, bolts and washers now. I don't mind, just happy that it's off, and saved myself £80+VAT getting someone else to do it.

The standard unit is heavy, compared to the bean cans!

Not that the TVR needs that weight in the back to help deliver all that power without spinning the wheels and or end up traveling in the wrong direction off a roundabout!. Top job anyway, thats £100 saved for other goodies or 75 litres arab juice.
