Finger followers

When I eventually get around to looing at a car with a speed six engine, are there any tell tale signs that the inevitable failure is looming...i.e. can you hear a distinctive valve train rattle/clicking?
Sorry if the question is a bit negative...there seem to be plenty of cars for sale at present without any engine upgrades for quite strong money (I know they are supposed to be appreciating etc, but I am sure this is mostly spurred don by a few dealers, and obviously it is music to your ears if you already own one) and it would be a shame if I bought a car and then it went bang!

The only way to be sure (if the car is running the original cams and followers) is to lift the cam cover and inspect....
Id also remove the plugs and inspect, and do a compression test to determine if there is any guide wear. If you want to be 100% sure.

I don't think it's just the dealers upping the prices, these cars are very rare, well under 250 out there!
As for finger followers, it seems that as long as the engine has been properly looked after, you should be OK - but for me, I always had a plan to upgrade the engine anyway, which gives it a 5 year warranty. Even if £30k is spent on car and sorting it out, it's still so much car for the money, and more unique than exotica costing tens of thousands more!
