HPI from just a VIN/chassis number?
Discussion
If I have the VIN/chassis number from a TVR registered abroad, will a HPI check give me any information? The car in question is a Tamora for sale privately, but I'm just concerned about the possibility of it being a damaged/repaired or even stolen vehicle.
Is there an equivalent service to HPI in other countries?

Hi Roy - I was wondering which advert it was for? From that chassis number I've fired you an email about getting more info on the car via the chassis number. However, if the owner doesn't have an old UK number written on an old bill or MOT with the car, that has to make you suspicious that he's hiding something. The chassis number indicates it's a Tamora 3.6 engine made in 2004.

Was a Category C write off 10/02/2008.
Cheers Butter Face, that's just what I needed to know. The car was relatively cheap compared to what they fetch in the UK, but had no history with it. The original garage which sold it never got back to me when I asked for information. So the warning signs were there, but I just needed confirmation of my suspicions.I'll save my money.
Thanks again.

Hi TVRinBFGThanks for the email, but Butter Face has provided the necessary information for me to make a decision.
The car was for sale privately in Germany. The seller is the second owner since the German dealer, so he is probably unaware of what he has himself. I believe in Germany, a garage has to declare any accidents to a vehicle when selling, so the person he bought it off may have been aware, but if the damage didn't happen in Germany, who knows what was said. I'm not sure if telling him would serve any purpose.
I could, of course, try to negotiate a better price, but what's a good price for a Cat C, 2005 Tamora? Without knowing what the damage was originally, how would you check the repair was done to a good standard?
it all seems a bit risky to me. Is it worth it?
Cheers.
Roy

Hi Roy - The 05 one in Rheinzabem says accident damaged on the advert. So the owner knows about it.
Yes, I noticed that last night. The original advert said 'Accident free' and was priced 2000 euro more. Maybe he uses Pistonheads, or someone else checked and let him know.Would you say it was worth a shout at that price now?

That's the company that originally sold it in Germany, but that's not the same car. The one I was looking at is Black.Roy the Boy said:

That :-).I did some investigation, and James from James Agger Autosport was so kind to do a HPI check for me on that car. (Cheers James, TMS advert on it´s way as promised...)
Oh, and there is a recent front damage as well, which is minor, though...
There is no service history whatsoever.
