What sealant for petrol pump access cover?

Had a small fuel leak from the pressurised fuel pipe as it connects to the tank on the Sag - and had to remove access cover to the fuel pump to fix it. A simple case of tightening the jubilee clips. The cover was held in place with black sealant and self-tapping screws. Does anyone know what black sealant is usually used to ensure a good watertight seal? Whatever it is, it's a b****r to get off
