Target cars Tamora
Discussion
Target cars have had a Tamora for sale for several years. From the pictures it looks like it needs a retrim, IHMO a respray, and probably an engine rebuild given it hasn’t moved for so long. So that’s £15k as a starter for ten. Has anyone been to see it? I know Target don’t have a great reputation, but the car is HPI clear and the chassis looks ok.
Depends whether you want a keeper, a bespoke toy or to make money on it.
Go and see it yourself.
If it is a keeper, then the poor interior and exterior don't stop the car from being used. Mechanicals do. Budget for an engine rebuild and then do the rest as and when. I think the cars are stored inside at Target so unless the chassis was rotten when it went in, it is probably structurally fine.
They have a ramp and are happy for you to inspect it.

If you've got the money to buy it and £15-£20 K ready to spend on it, save your self the bother and buy something you can use now with proper history.
That car will always be a challenge to own until its been rebuilt. It could easily digest more than £15-£20 K.
Some very low grade costs
Body off with limited work to chassis but new brakes, shocks, bushes and Geo £5 K
Engine and clutch £7.5 K
Prep and Paint £5 K
Re-trim and hood £5 K
Wheel refurb and tyres £750- £1000
Service £750 (limited cost due to new parts)

You guys really need to get off the fence. What are you really trying to say?
I didn’t want to trek all that way to turn around the minute I set eyes on it so the feedback is useful.
Essentially I was hoping it would be a decent fixer-upper. Because they’re so scarce there is never one in the classifieds that is the right colour/spec at the right price. The Target car is effectively a blank canvas and at £15k price plus £15k repairs almost makes sense. As has been mentioned that £15k repair bill could quickly get our of hand though.
More thought required me thinks.

I know this sounds a bit silly given the potential refurb costs, but it’ll cost a lot of money to go and see it and I don’t want to pay money to view a car. You’d could do it in a day, but if you end up buying it’ll be a very long day. I reckon if this car had been for sale in the UK it would have sold by now. Target’s reputation is an instant off-putter and for many the location will put it firmly into the ‘can’t be bothered’ category. Frustrating.
Sounds like a great car. Certainly give me a nudge if you decide to sell. Maybe you could post a pic to give me something to think about.
If I’m honest one of the things I really really want to do is choose a colour combo. When the Tamora was in production I was at the start of my career with a first time mortgage and just couldn’t stretch to one. Today I can, but I want to choose the colours. I want that excitement. I want the process of choosing, deciding and then spending my days off at the paint shop and the trimmer taking photos. It really is a bucket list thing for me. I just need the right car to work with.

Then buy the Target Car. Can't see the point in paying a premium for a car that needs nothing doing to it then spending loads making it bespoke. If I’m honest one of the things I really really want to do is choose a colour combo. May as well go the whole hog if your going to repaint and retrim...If I’m honest one of the things I really really want to do is choose a colour combo. Thought I recognised it Tom - it's my brother's old Tam and the one he has often said he shouldn't have sold it. It's his fault that I bought one.....saw it, drove it, loved it. Here's a shot of his from 2011, and one of mine.

A well sorted Tam should be a keeper. You are doing right with your propper car, Geoff.

Although I did end up spending a lot more than the original cost of the car, but what fun it has been..
I like blank canvasses. I even bought a project Tuscan that someone else got from TVR Glen and wanted shot of after having gathered dust in his company workshop for years. However that was £6K (with some pieces missing -oil cooler, lights, air box, front brakes and assorted small stuff & I didn't buy the 18" Spiders for obvious reasons) and came with a pretty much perfect chassis.
The thing to watch here is prior and badly repaired accident damage. Put it on a lift & check the chassis for butt welds in places where there shouldn't be any. I've seen some shockers from that source - none of it terminal, but a complete stripdown to a bare chassis is not what you want at this price point. Paint, interior, even engine are of secondary importance as you will end up changing/rebuilding all that as a matter of course.

There's a crimson red one on Ebay privately, for £21,500, if you want one closer to home......

Yep, I bought my Tam in 2013 for £16k knowing I would have the 4.3 engine upgrade, new suspension, gearbox and new leather trim - what I bought was just the blank canvas for me to make the car my own.

It was you and Mr Mott that I had in mind when making the comments Although I did end up spending a lot more than the original cost of the car, but what fun it has been..
