Seems my T5 box is starting to develop the "small graunch when changing from 4th to 5th" problem. Apparently this is a weak point of the box and the synchro starts to fail. Can be brought on by always going into fifth to help selection of reverse. Anyone had to have theirs repaired/replaced out of warranty and of so what was the cost?

I thought you have to do that to avoid graunching into reverse - are you saying that ruins the synchro?

I alway understood it was the torque of the engine that caused 5th gear to fail because people would accelerate hard in fifth gear from low rpm. This being the a weak part of the gearbox.

I understood you will not wear out 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear's syncro by selecting it before reverse.

All IMHO !!

cheers

Just picked that up by searching this forum with the word "synchro". Can't be sure it is fact but am avoiding pre-selecting 5th until I speak to the dealer.

Anyone got any idea of cost?

The Box has to be rebuilt, this happend to my Tamora. The box gets taken out by your dealer and sent to the factory. Take your pick on cost, I would say £500-£800

My Chimaera always used to do that. If I took the change slowly or at low RPM then it would be OK. If I tried a quick change then it would often graunch. Then the clutch lever arm broke. I had that and the clutch replaced. I never had a problem with 5th after that. That was 4 years ago, I don't have the car now but I know that it is still ok.

Yes, have had exactly same problem, had to get a reconditioned replacement gearbox. If i recall correctly it was in the 600-700 quid range, I'm afraid

Had my T350c for a week now and been away and not been driving it for too long but I have noticed that every time I change from 4th to 5th it crunches I take it this is the same problem as mentioned here?

I have a 3rd party warranty but I guess it isn't covered?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be speaking to the dealer today and will let you know what they say about likely cause & cost of repair?

Spoke to Racing Green (Martin) about the very same issue last week, and he said pretty common, and pretty straight forward to fix. Perhaps give him a call.

LB

Note: This was an issue on a T350, not my Tuscan.
