I'm sure you have all noticed that the Sagaris has higher profile tyres on the front than the T350... :nerd:
I'm going to be in the market for a full set of tyres all around soon, anybody got any thoughts on the pro's & con's about changing the profiles on the 350 (or Tamora's with 18's!) to match those of the Sagaris? :scratchchin:

I too had thought that switching to 225/40s on the front might do something positive with regards to making the steering slightly less darty. I've still got 50% of the meat left on my fronts though...
Only thing I would check is clearance. OK, so 40s won't be tractor tyres but the higher wall might catch the wheelarch.

That was my thoughts too, as well as giving slightly better ride quality.... IIRC there is plenty of room under the wheel-arch, but will check again toninght...
Correct me if im wrong, but it has always been my understanding that changing ONLY the profile of a tyre, messes with the rolling radius and in turn upsets natural rotation and balance of a wheel. This will make your speedo be out of sync and also have an effect on handling.
A car is setup to run specific profile/width, so messing with one and not the other will casue adverse affect. If you are to change the profile(height) of a tyre, you need to compensate width to match.

We're talking front wheels Kevin, not rears which would affect the speedo/gearing.
The difference we're talking about here won't have any effect on camber 'n stuff either. It's not as if we're looking to go from 185/60 to 255/35 on the same rim. We're talking 225/35 to 225/40.
As long as the tyres are round I think we should be OK

at the risk of having my head bitten off again...tyres? no comment!

Errrrrrrrrr.........go on then!
The only thing I could think of was the implication of changing to a non OEM fitment, potential warranty issues etc but as you are just outside factory warranty it doesn't matter I guess. Depends on what you want to achieve...maybe it might be worth considering keeping the standard tyres( I understand there are some very good value tyres out there, LOL) but upgrading shock absorbers to Sagaris spec? budget allowing of course. The difference in ride is very noticeable.A lovely bit of initial compliance over pot holes/bumps etc but firming very quickly......my understanding is that the factory is looking into fitting these as standard across the range...they are that good!

Two things -
I know I have a 2 year Mechanical and 1 year body and trim warranty. I took that to mean that all "mechanical" parts of the car (ie engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension) are covered for two years, and everything else expires after the first 12 months. Am I wrong in that assumption? What is the split between whats covered and whats not...?
Secondly, I have allready upgraded to Nitrons earlier this year and they have made a big difference in ride quality. Its still a bit nervous at the front though so I think slightly higher prole rubber at the front might help this...
thanks for your thoughts,
MJC

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe it is worthwile having a full alignment check done, if that hasn't been done recently-Racing Green is close to you and they have just put in a fully computerised system......it takes a couple of hours to set up and do properly but I am told its well worth while.Even slight adjustments can make a huge change to steering feel and make the car more 'sure footed' on the road.
as for the warranty, I always err on the side of caution,if the suspension components are covered it is worthwhile reading your warranty policy...some underwriters are funny about changing anything that wasn't OEM. Im not sure over all that a slightly higher profile will make that much difference. The Sagaris tyres are higher but are still a relatively low profile...if you are happy with the suspension set up and it seems you are, I would try the above first....if for no other reason to avoid spending too much-i dont think a tyre shop will give you your money back if you change and decide different tyres have had no effect.

TVR1 - tell us more about the Sagaris shocks. (I assume this is shocks and springs). Can we buy them from a dealer already? (I've not seen any notification). Will this suspension have the desired effect considering the T350 is slightly different chassis-wise?
I know they're planning on putting the Sagaris suspension on the T350 out of the factory in future, but maybe they're making other changes.
Personally the dartiness is part of the experience and I'm not about to spend 1,000+ pounds making it slightly better. If tyres can help a smidge, then IMO it is worth conidering when they need changing.

Spot on Targarama, If it was £100.00 thats different but whatever you change tyre wise, I think it really will have very little real world benefit for the outlay. Hence I thought looking at the suspension set up for considerably less. I agree with your comment about the dartiness being part of the feel of the car....but If the car is being used on a day today basis it can become tiring,Tuscan 2 versus 350/sagaris is a good example.I find the Sagaris so easy to drive when I am not totally with it or in the mood.
Yes T350 will be getting Sagaris shocks....as for the rest of the range and what other components and when? Im not sure, hence saying looking at rather than are.The track on the Sagaris is wider but other than that pretty much the same as the 350 chassis wise.
as for other changes I will refer to the notes at the bottom of price list that I have in front of me...'Owing to TVR's policy of continuous development, the right is reserved to change spec etc at any time' Yep I know thats a cop out but unfortunately if I suggest something may be about to happen, that often becomes 'it is' going to happen and bearing in mind that I am employed by TVR directly,I don't want to put any one on the spot up at Blackpool.(the bullet always comes flying back,LOL) As far as availability I dont believe that they are being offered as a specific upgrade at the moment but its always worth asking if your dealer will do it for you.
hope that helps

Well, I havent heard any really negative comments about doing it, so I think I'll give it a try when I change the tyres.... if no discernable difference then I'll just change back next time!
By the way it is my daily drive, so I do tend to notice even the smallest changes..

Useful stuff
Thanks. I'll think about the Sagaris suspension swap for the future. I've driven a Sagaris on the road and it was less nervous, but then not 12,000 worth (the price differential between a loaded T350 and a Sagaris).
Right now I don't see another TVR I want since the Targa just became unorderable. If I keep my car for the long term suspension swapping may be viable.
First stop for me will be an Austec remap, but not for a few months. Red Rose stylee power for #1k

Don't know how credible it is but I heard Tams had lower profiles on the front to alter the attitude of the car to slightly more nose down after some unfortunate aero incidents with the prototypes. Something to do with altering the proportion of air under the car as opposed to over it.
Could well be toss but it is the cheapest way of altering the angle of attack and therefore the aero balance of the car. Tams also have adjustable suspension on the front for this reason.

Didnt know the Tam had adjustable front suspension! I do remember the nice guy at the Silverstone meet pointing out to me the increased ride height of the newer Tams, compared to the older ones, my front was definitely lower!
