Guys

As we all do, I check my oil regularly. I think Im doing it correctly...??

Go for a lovely drive, get everything nice and hot
Turn engine off and quickly remove the dipstick
Burn fingers
Wipe dipstick and replace
Remove and read level

My question is that in 3000 miles I have never had to top up, the level is exactly as it was when I got the car.

Oil is lovely golden colour all looks rosey (touch wood)...

Does anyone have the same experience, using no oil?

Id hate to be doing it wrong only to find out later.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Same here, even after 2 track days. I can't be trying hard enough...

My oil now looks mucky though, 5000 mile since last service (planning 12k service in a couple of weeks time and I won't be doing too many miles in the meantime)..

Our TT uses about a litre between services, my A6 uses none.

Same here. 3000 miles plus an enjoyable day destroying my tires around North Weald and not a drop used.

Cheers,
Howard

Mines done over 8000 miles and I've never had to top up the oil.
I still have the two different grades of un-opened top up bottles of oil in the boot.

Does use a bit of water in this hot weather thou.

I check it every week (only gets driven at weekends) and I'd say I put in 200-300 Mil's every 3 weeks.

I think it depends which monkey-boys service your car, for over a year, I didnt use any oil, since the last (very disappointing and very stressfull) service, I've put loads of oil in!

Problem is Chris - mine was serviced at the same place - I assume using the same oil/mechanics and it hasn't used a noticeable amount in 5k (not enough to bother topping up anyway), including a thrash to the South of France and 2 track days I bought a litre before the recent Oulton Park track day thinking I'd better make sure it was well topped up - its still unopened.

I know you've had problems with 'them', but I don't think there is anything wrong with their oil/ability to put it in the engine Maybe you car did have a different viscosity oil in before the recent service though ...

yeah, they put a thicker viscosity oil in, the car has been running a lot richer since, with soot on the rim of the exhausts, and the car feel ever so slightly out of tune.
I have been topping up with my supply of Mobil 1 0-W40 since, but have put a couple of litres in since the service 2.5K miles ago!

That's a lot of oil Chris.

Did you get that oil leak sorted?

The leak turned out to be nothing, not as much as I initially thought, the car drives fine, used every day, it just hasn't felt 100% since it was last serviced though.
The way I look at it is, if anything goes I shall simply get an upgrade from TVR Power

Chris - My dealer told me that anything up to 1 litre per 1,000 miles was normal in terms of oil consumption, so hopefully your oil usage is nothing too sinister...

I didn't used to use any oil for the first couple of years but now I'm up to 28000 miles I've been topping up regularly.
Could be because TVR (and TVR Power) have switched from Mobil 1 to Carlube RRR.
Cheers..... Andrew

28K! , hopefully, I'll catch up with you soon!!
Yes, Carlube was used for my last service also, before that (and since!), it has always had the Mobil 0W 40
It hasn't used as much the past week or so, and the 'soot' around the exhaust rims are not so prevelent, so I assume my car's used most of the Carlube oil and is running mostly on the Mobil 1 now.
I assumed the car would use less if thicker oil was used! Odd!

That's interesting - mine has been using a bit of oil, and my exhaust has become quite sooty (too many curries I reckon ) since I tried 10w40 Magnatec. I thought it was the start of the dreaded head problems!

Mind you it's hard to tell being as I've got a faulty oil pressure sender so it keeps telling me I've got no oil pressure. Of course there are no senders available to replace it!

That is interesting Nubbin! Makes me wonder if the thicker oil is totally wrong for our engines, as your symptoms seem to be a mirror of mine!

Hardly any oil used, just normally have to top it up slightly at around 500 miles before each service - I got one of those normal sized (5 litres?) Mobil 1 containers when I first got the car - and I've still not used it all.
