Under 500 miles - new engine sir?
Discussion
Mate of mine with a 55 plate T350C, under 500 miles on the clock, driven properly during run-in period. Dead engine - nasty v loud tapping noises coming from within. Dealer thinks new engine needed.
Hopefully mate will join and be along to report soon.
Car sounded OK at 50 miles on the clock when I last heard it.

Will your friend be demanding a new car?targarama said:

Nightmare. I'm sure we would all be interested in the diagnosis.
Just to put this into perspective I had a golf V5 that went pop under 1000 miles so please don't all jump on the S6 engine is flawed and pants route again.
I love this engine, don't consign it to the bin by flaming it and putting people off....
I've had 911's (GT2 currently) Ferrari 360 Stradale, 550, 575 and F40, Lambo's, Massers, Jags, BM's including the CSL and none have had an engine that is a patch on the S6 for character and punch. It's like a carb fed racer.... stunning!!!

full run in period is approx. 6000 miles so it had to have been treated very poorly to have major problems at only 500 miles. Mine has done about 940 miles and i've not had any major problems.

Yeah right.
With by the book running in procedures my engine(2000 Red Rose) low oil pressure warning light came on at 810 miles along with a loud tapping noise(broken finger follower). Phoned my dealer who said it would be fine and bring it in at the 1000 mile service, I replied too late already on an AA loader coming to you.
Of course it went back home for a top end re-build. etc etc etc
Apart from the well documented design flaws the simple fact is the factory cannot assemble them correctly. Getting a good one is a lottery.

Bollocks. I know the driver, you don't. It has been treated properly. Even treating it like a complete arse wouldn't have worn it out in 500 miles anyway.
I don't think this is the usual speed six type failure, or I'd have posted in the engine forum. Something obviously wasn't fitted or adjusted properly from new (it still runs OK, just very noisily).
My old boss' 5 series gearbox blew up at 500 miles stranding him in Paris so I agree, happens to all new cars. Typical its happened to a TVR though...
I should hope you've not had any major problems in 940 miles. Neither did I. This guy hasn't been so lucky.

I hope he gets it sorted with the minimum of fuss and expense.
Why? 500 miles, warranty fix. Job done. Inconvenience? You have just got yourself first class travel home all on TVR expense.
Curtesy car from dealer/TVR till its fixed and Bob is a very close relative.
Lawyer look at it from a differnt view...while you wait and put it off the Uk govt grows ever nearer to banning and legislating such vehicles as TVR off the roads. I have no doubt that in 10yrs time the motorng freedoms we still have today will be non-existent ad 99% of the road network will be speed camera monitored. If you ever want one, now is the time to by one. Otherwise it will be too late.

Bl00dy hell, DJC says something non-confrontational and which I agree with shocker
When people ask me about the TVR I tell them the 'in 10 years time' story. Reality is I probably won't be capable of driving a TVR properly by then
I'll have to get a Porsche or an Aston. Yawn.Som would be suprised at how many brand new cars have to go back to have major problems sorted, I bought a brand new car in 2002, only to find the engine management light come at around 600 miles on the clock, followed by a strong smell of petrol; turned out all the valves were'nt put in properly and they all needed re-seating! Chan had another brand new car that year, and within a week, the ABS brakes failed completely , as in no brakes at all! When the car came back, the air con didn't work and when opening the door, the whole door card dropped onto the car park floor! These were mass manufactured cars, built mainly by robots,, this happens quite a lot I suspect!

This was worthy of being repeated. I'm totally in agreement having also owned other exotics. The throttle response above 5000 is astonishing, thanks to wheeler's light flywheel obsession.
Also my cousin's Toureg V10 is on it's third engine in less than 2 years.

Totally agree with all of this too. In fact the Sagaris is already being watered down by legislation. The current rumour is that it won't pass drive-by noise tests with side exit exhausts.... yeah so they could do a ferrari and do dual exhausts with a valve but its a very expensive and heavy solution and also frankly a bit silly.

I know of a T2 that has gone back for a rebuild at 1500 miles. There was a bolt missing that held the cams down, so the one cam has failed in that time...
Quality assurance from a new TVR. Buy a sorted one second hand I would say...
Mr F
Nice one DJC - fully agree.
We have to enjoy this freedom while we still have it.
Big brother and the Do Gooder brigade will soon see to it that these pleasures will soon disappear and be made illegal.
I'm sure with ever more stringent noise regs and emmisions tests, compulsory protection equipment, sat monitoring (speed & distance) are all on the cards for the next 10 years.
Or perhaps just simply a man at the ministry :
Hmmm - TVR's that looks like too much fun.
BANNED.

The only positive thing to take from that is that the failures have been due to the way in which the engines are assembled (in that case, wrongly).
It's not a good situation to have, but it's not as if the new engines are proving unreliable because of component quality/design issues.
company cars my firm have owned
BMW 7 series
camshaft failure in year one
cam shaft failure in year two
BMW 5 series
Top end failure that we never got the details on-was towed home by an Alfa Romeo
Mercedes 320E persistant ignition faults
Range Rover
Engine problems -too many to mention. We finally gave it back when it broke down on its way back from being repaired
Audi 80S
driveshaft failure
front suspension collapse....twice!
Most reliable cars we have had are Toyota's -nothing goes wrong with Toyota's .
So we should all sell our Tiv's and by Toyota's then
