We have decided to upgrade the standard CD Tuner for an Ipod Ready Alpine unit and upgraded speakers.
Has anyone done a similar thing? It's not a cheap upgrade so before Peninsula get their spanners out I thought I would check to see if anyone has done this already. The head unit is the most expensive part of the upgrade.

I just fitted a Blaupunkt DAB54 to my brother's BMW this morning. Slightly newer version of the DAB53 I assume. Cracking head unit! Especially like the fact it takes SD memory cards for music (much easier for MP3s than writing to CD.
The DAB ariel is a little black box with wires 'hanging' out of it which sticks to the screen. You're supposed to stick it to the windscreen in the top corner. His works a treat kind of laying along the bottom of the windscreen. My guess on the TVR would be that the ariel is sitting just below the dash top behind the glovebox.
£309 inc. I'm tempted to get one myself if only for the SD feature.

I upgraded the head unit in my car with no issues at all. The car came installed with a standard ISO wiring harness and so it was simply a case of using the keys supplied with the new headunit to remove the old one, unplug the connector, plugin the new headunit and push it back into the daskboard. A 5 minute job. I have looked into getting an IPod adapter for mine and this is where I would get a professional to do the job. The dash is pretty much all one box through which the air from the heater flows, there are no tubes in the dash to take the air to the vents. The headunit is in another glassfibre box expoxied into this box and so sealed from the air. To pass wires out into the glovebox, for example, means drilling holes, passing the wires through and sealing them properly to ensure that air from the heater will not get in to the back of the headunit, not sure if it would cause any problems but I'd rather not find out.
Ugrading speakers of the same size is not an issue, inserting larger speakers required use of a Dremel or similar to cut a bigger hold in the fibre glass. (This applies to a T350 of course but I suspect that it is not so different for a Tamora.
Cheers,
Howard

I'm guessing a 2005 Tamora would have the standard ISO wiring harness too?
Does anyone know if connecting a Pioneer AVIC-X1R would be so simple?

When I had mine fitted, it didn't take them much longer than a couple of hours, plus hard wireing the RA2, so I assume the connecters are pretty standard;

We had the DAB53 in the Chim, so I had Peninsula swap it as part of the trade in/sale. But yes, the 54 looks a nice unit.
The 53 has the SD card feature as well, and it works very well. I have a 512 meg card in there with a selection on it...
I guess the aerial, as you suggest, is laying along inside the dash. Its not perfect, but I think DAB coverage isn't great at the moment? Its certainly good enough for my use at the moment.

The Chameleon Green Saggy in Peninsula has a natty Ariel on the roof. I am not sure if that is what comes with factory fit DAB. I remember seeing a Red Tuscan S 2 yrs ago in David Hendry with an identical ariel and I seam to recall them saying it was a car with DAB.
That funny little "bee sting" aerial about 6 inches or so long, is the DAB aerial that comes with the factory DAB kit... IIRC

Chris that Sat Nav Unit looks great. I note you have your Road Angel Hard Wired. Do you still have a bit of wire dangling or is it seamless?
Yes, there is a bit of wire showing, otherwise I wouldn't be able to plug it into the back of the RA, as I have it placed in the windscreen. The wire can be tucked away in-between the two tiers of dash mouldings though, when not in use, (then again, its always in my Tam, the Clio would be lucky to sprit to 30, let alone 60!! lol)
