Welcome to TVR ownership
Discussion
Hi my name,s Cammy and i have recently bought a 3yr old Tamora. Every thing had been fine until this weekend when i took the car out for its first good run as i have only done 200mls in 2 months. Sunny day, roof off, fantastic!!! Then i noticed while scrolling through the dash readouts it reads 11v instead of the usual 13.5v then 10v then 8.5v. The speedo starts acting crazy all over the place until 0mph then the car conks out! tried to start it "nothing". I gave up and called the AA, just as i had thought A BURNT OUT ALTERNATOR. So as i waved goodbye to my pride and joy on the back of a low loader i thought is this normal for a car with only 11.500mls on the clock. it is a full serviced (just had 12.000ml big service), garaged, pampered, always warmed up before driven car. Its under warranty so no cost just huge disapointment. Cheers Cammy (thanks for letting me have a good moan!)
well had the same thing but at 80 mph when i lost all power. That was a blown fuse to the alternator, hopefully it may be that. It is a big bugger and had completely melted some how.
As to your question of well is this normal for a TVR to break down, depends to whom you talk to. Some people like myself have had a few problems some big, others have had none at all. Think it just depends on the car and how it was built.
hope they fix your car soon and you are back to driving it again

Cheers guys for the replys, the garage have just called and as if by magic the car is ready, Sounds as if you were right a blown fuse fixed in under a day, anyone know where this fuse is located for future reference and could it be done ourselves, i say this because the nearest TVR dealer to me is 50mls away, a town the size of Glasgow and not one TVR dealer. Anyway i like train journeys? oh and a 10ml bus journey also, thanks again for youre help. Cammy
To answer your question : yes it's usual for an 11500 mile car, a 50 mile car and a 77000 mile car. Milagee is of little consequence .. if this is the sort of thing you can't cope with heaven help you when your clutch goes. You've bought a Tamora : TVR's most desirable version of their least reliable paltform. What else did you expect?
Tamoras are lovely, I'd happily have one .. I love them to bits .. but you have to be a certain type of owner to really like a TVR even these days... it's frustrating when a single fuse can leave you stranded, but it won't be the last time your car lets you down...
Still, look on the bright side .. you could have bought a Prosche and broken down and not had the pleasure of the TVR's beautiful styling and *sense of occasion* that you've enjoyed with the tamora.
Hope you have many happy miles together

On what basis do you make that statement on?

And this doesn't happen to any other make of car then??

Believe it or not, but I am one of the many who have enjoyed both reliability and the 'sense of occasion' for the past 2 years of everyday driving, not bad for the 'least reliable platform, must be a fluke eh!

We have made the anti-suge fuse a service item and replace them as a matter of course at the 12k/24 month service. Good that it was just a simple fix, and if you had the fuse with you the patrolman probably could have got you sorted. Keep enjoying it. Best regards, Tony
I am having my next 12K service done at SP, you are, unfortunately too far away for me
, would it be possible for me to have one of these special fuses, so they can change it when they carry out the service?

statement based on 11 years of working on TVRs ..
Yes it happens to other cars, but teh guy has a tamora, hence the tamora-targetted answer
Not a fluke, but you're a muppet if you think your reliable car is representative of teh Marque in general.
Like I say, the tamora is my 2nd favourite TVR after the Cerbera, but unlike you I'm under no illusion as to it's capability. You base your experience on a sample of one, I base mine on a sample of 11 years ..
I admire your blind faith in your car, it's great to see passionate TVR owners (I'm one of them, in fact I have two TVRs ) but all I say is : accept it for what it is, a great car with flaws .. and you'll not be disappointed.
The owner here is clearly disappointed that at 11500 miles his car blows a fuse .. not a good start for TVR ownership experience imo.
that's all
have a nice day

Not tamoras for 11 years you muppet .. sheesh!
LOl, but you said that you base your sample over 11 years, and I base my example of one, so, I quite naturally assumed you meant Tamora, as it was the Tamora that was mentioned.
Also, you don't do S6 servicing, do you? So how could you possibly know its the worst of the range? I have spoken to other 'professionals' and they say the opposite to you, so I can only assume it's a bit of both - judging from your post history, you don'y like the S6 very much (to say the least), and that's fine, but equally, I think its also fair to balance the crap you just spouted, for the benefit of new members.
I respect what you do immensely, but if you feel the need to talk down to people like you have, it makes you look like the muppet!
I'm having the same alternator problem with my T350.
Noticed the voltage was lower than normal - less than 12 indicates it's running off the battery with no alternator recharging it.
I went and got a fuse (100 amp - £.056p) at my dealer and set about changing it.
For info - it's mounted under the air box and on the back of the starter motor.
I'd recommend every one picks up a spare 100 amp fuse and just keeps it in the glove box - stuck in the middle of Europe somewhere you might just need it.
Anyway - to remove air box :
2 clips on box along side inner wing (then may be cable tie locked on)
2 large allen key bolts that attach a strap to air box - these are on the solid allow inlet mainfold.
1 * oil pipe (may be jubilee clipped) to front of air box.
1 * small air pipe at front of air box.
1 electrical slip at top of air box
Lastly - you will need to reach behind the air box - from the front and if you follow the air box to about midway - you will find another clip just like the first 2 that you undid along the front (next to inner wing).
Pull air box top towards inner wing to free from inlet stubs and then to front of car.
Stop after 6 inches and remove final small Air pipe from rear of air box.
That's it .. you should now be able to see the alternator and the starter motor and the fuse holding at the back of the starter motor.
Sadly - my fuse was fine.
Damm - so it's off to the dealers soon.
Time for some fun in the SEAC in the meantime

Oh dear oh dear what have i started (it was only a fuse). Whats going to happen when my clutch goes? WORLD WAR 3. Liked the MUPPET PHOTO, PEACE AND LOVE!!! Cammy
Nothing. Just my extraordinarily warped humour. I'm very old you know.
I would apologise but I'm a cantancerous old git.

Jools,
Having worked for so long on Cerbies, you can't honestly believe the Tamora platform is the least reliable?
Say we compare a 2002 s6 Cerbera and Chris's car. The Cerbera would be more reliable and cost less to run? Certainly not in my experience of the 2 platforms.
It would be interesting to know how many starter motors, clutches, wiper motors and electrical 'black boxes' the two had gone through in their 4 year existence!
Not trying to have a go (as clearly you've forgotten more about the cars than I know), but are you sure the s6 issue is not clouding your judgement?
