It appears that some protective cream stickers were put on my pedals from new. I suppose the original owner never bothered peeling them off or therefore cleaning the pedals. Whats left are some pathetic looking dirty cream pedals rather than a set with a shiny alloy finish.

Any ideas on the best fluids for removing this film and achieving a nice shiny finish. Or does soap hot water and elbow grease sound good?

You could try alloy wheel cleaner, some contain a slight amount of acid, which seems to do the job, just be sure to wipe them clean and dry afterwards though!

White spirit and a cloth - magic stuff, gets anything off anything (dissolves the gluey mess in this instance).
