18" SPIDERS, WILL SOME ONE PLEASE........................
Discussion
Hi Joe,
As you know, I've got my spare 18' silver alloys. I'm not sure if they can be repaired properly as one of them is quite badly out of shape. Plus 2 of them would need refurbing at a cost of roughly £50 each.
Perhaps a garage could bang the bent one back into shape for you, but HL Gornor's told me they woudln't do it, so thats why I bought the anthracites. I think I paid about £750 for the new alloys - pretty good value really. I wouldn't want to sell you a wheel you couldn't use after all! Some of them might be of use to you though?
I'm back on the Wirral next weekend though if you're interested.
Cheers, James

Hi bud,
£750 does sound reasonable doesnt it. But I should be able to get hold of 1 anthracite one so would be interested in buying 2 or 3 off you. I mite be in the market for that plate too :-). Anyway give me an idea how much u would like for the alloys/tyres and i'll hopefully c u at the weekend.
Cheers

Well worth changing your alloys from 16" to 18", as I've recently done this. The ride is much better, and the 18" alloys look better than the 16".
Got to get rid of my 16" alloys now !!!!!
Odd! I remember the evo article commenting on how the 18" wheels destroyed the handling characteristics of the Tam - they said the 16" wheels and tyres were much better for handling!

Correct i read that too, also all the dealers and 'trackers' say that 16's make Tams and T350's handle much better. "18's for show, 16's for go".

I was under the assumption that when you fit 18" alloys, there is less space between the alloy and wheel arch, therefore the tyre has to be thinner. A thinner tyre has a smaller aspect ratio than a thicker tyre fitted to the 16" alloys (assuming the width is the same), making the steering response and handling better with the thinner tyre?

I initially thought this, then I thought about just how large 18" wheels are! 16" wheels look large on some cars twice the size and weight of our cars. I guess we have just become used to seeing very large wheels on cars, any car, of late. I think that perhaps the 16" wheels coupled with the thicker tyre wall would be the best compromise between ride comfort/handling. Trouble is, the 18" wheels do look darn fine in the wheel arch space, not hard to convince ourselves that they're better in every way!

You are correct, in that you must keep the same rolling radius of the wheel and tyre, so going to an 18 inch will reduce the tyre depth. Steering response and handling *should* theoretically increase, but what will be more apparant is the comfort factor. For the same reason steering should be better - there is virtually no tyre wall to give on the ultra-low profiles - so also get a much, much harder ride, you'll feel each bump and dip in the road 10 times worse.
it's not definitely the case that a lower profile will give better handling - look at F1 tyres, they are not low profile as they use these as part of the suspension, which also plays a large part in the road holding and steering feel.
16s give a better ride on the road, but are lethal on a track - the handling is bloody awful! When I switched form 16s to 18s I didn't really notice a great deterioration in ride comfort, and I cannot say that the handling is significantly worse either. The 18s are a lot more bendy though!!

MART350T,
1 down 3 to go, I won that 18" anthracite spider off ebay. Hopefully will recieve that asap and hunt down another 3. Incidentaly what are the tyre choices for these 18" spiders?
Be careful. The front and rear wheels are different - do you know which you have? Look at how the bolts stick out to see what I mean (not sure about the 16 inch wheels though).

As I found out, to my cost, when I first had my Tam!
