Something gave way in the engine on the 350 on the way home last night (loss of oil pressure, big power drop and clouds of oil smoke out the back, along with a rust preventing coating of oil all over the underside of the car). It got taken back to Racing Green courtesy of the AA this morning. The main suspect is the chain for the scavenger pump (or something in that area). Bugger!

At least the good news is the 2 year warranty on the engine - I didn't have anything in writing confirming that and was worried I might have to pick up the bill for a rebuild, so was very relieved when Martin at RG confirmed that. Will just have to cope without the car for a few weeks.

To make my day complete I borrowed my sister's Fiesta to see me though the coming weeks and it broke down on the M25 this afternoon... Well, I'm getting my monies worth out of the AA! The guy from the highways agency traffic patrol who stopped to check on me didn't want me anywhere near his car after I'd told him the story.

Sorry to hear this. Let us all know what it is and what could prevent it happening in future (TVR don't seem very good at the last part). Hope you'll be smiling again soon.

Really sorry to hear this Martin - when my engine failed it was a broken scavenge pump chain, which Dream Machines said was fairly unusual. I heard a loud metallic sound, then had lots of steam coming out of the bonnet.

Clearly the curse of the TVR - Tony from DM lent me his BMW initially, and it broke down in a petrol station the next day!

The DM low loader they were going to send to collect it then broke down ....

I'm guessing it can't be so rare as the guys at RG made the diagnosis pretty quickly (though it is yet to be confirmed) and they could describe why this causes the oil pressure to drop and then recover somewhat.

I didn't hear anything when it went (apart from the beep of the low oil warning), but that could just be due to the volume from the Super Sports Exhaust.

How long did yours take to be repaired and did the engine have to go back to the factory?

RG weren't sure if they'd repair the engine or have to send it to Blackpool (I guess that won't be decided until the factory go back to work next week).

You think they'll be someone there to take a look at it then?

:hurt: Agh - and now you have to get personal. :shame:

If you look back ay my posts I think you'll find most are informative and helpful - I try not to be silly. Personally I wouldn't want my property in with any supplier that may be just round the corner from having administrators in - have you ever tried reclaiming 'your' property in such cases?

Good news from Racing Green yesterday. The engine is now stripped down and replacement parts identified and ordered.

The problem was caused by a bearing for one timing/ancillary chains braking and bits of the bearing got into the scavenger pump causing it to seize and then its chain to break. They've taken the whole bottom end apart, are changing everything that is damaged and a few precautionary bits (the crank shaft is ok though). All of the bearings will be replaced. Hopefully they'll get the parts to start straight after the bank holiday.

Really looking forward to getting it back and being able to drive it again. My sister's 19 year old Fiesta is a real shock to my system, although in some ways it keeps the spirit of a TVR - I've already had to fix an oil leak it developed since I borrowed it.
