I just had the most stupid, immature childish strop!
Wife told me I can't use the Tam to pick up my son soon, due to the clutch being on its way out! The day is beautiful, I was so looking forward to a great drive, its just that I can't get it into my head that I may be left stranded, I just want to drive it, and she won't let!! I have to drive the MGF instead!! , not only that, she said that if I don't snap out of this strop soon, I wont even have that, but the Clio!!!!

She's right of course, I can't risk it, but mornings like this blind me to any reason!

God Dammit, I knew I should have pre-empted this!

How old????

Is the clutch now failing then? Or just high like you've been worrying about for the past few months?

If the former then fair enough, it needs to go to a garage. If the latter, well, cue comments about trousers and who wears them in the house

Clutch now biting VERY high, so much so that its getting very difficult to judge the bite when pulling away! I am booking it in at the earliest possible convenience.

Don't know what I was so mad about anyway, I have just this minute got back from a 60 mile trip there and same back, and I don't think I went over 40 most of the time because of traffic/roadworks/tractors and Rovers!

To rub salt into the wound, the petrol tank was empty! Just wait 'till she gets home.....................

Chris,

Any idea what is causing your clutch to bite high? Do they think the friction plates are worn? If so all that will happen is that the clutch will start to slip when accelerating hard. When the fingers start to snap the bite point gets lower to the point where the clutch will not release at all.

I've not heard of anyone being able to wear the plates out before the fingers snapped on a TVR, where the F355 with a very similar clutch pack but less torque tends to wear the plates out first. Strange.

Hi , No idea; I personally am not mechanically minded at all (although I do adhere to mechanical empathy for the car at all times). I was advised at my last service that my clutch will need replacing soon, due to the high bite of the clutch pedal. I am sure the clutch was not looked at, and it was simply a professional opinion, based on experience with the S6 clutch. I have not felt any slipping upon hard acceleration yet, and if the bite point gets lower when the fingers snap, that's slightly at odds with what I am experiencing!

If you need to rev the nuts off a car to pull away(eg car with cammy engine) you will wear out the clutch linings more quickly. If an engine has low down torque you use less revs, plates last longer.
The fingers breaking must be down to the amount of travel the bearing moves, if it moves further than it should it can cause fingers to break.

The biggest variable on clutch life expectancy is the driver

Fair point but I assume the F355 has at least enough torque to pull away without stalling.

I can't see how the driver would have that much effect on the fingers snapping but hey, I don't know enough about them.

All I meant was that if it is coming up for replacement due to worn plates then there's no reason why you shouldn't continue to use it as it shouldn't just pack up suddenly and you'll feel when it starts slipping. Not releasing due to broken fingers then you don't have that long to sudden total failure, as I found out the hard way.

I park on a steep slope and usually use high revs to drive off. Is this going to shorten my clutch life?
