Personally, I would go with Austec, have heard only good stuff about them (have heard good stuff about Power also), but if it were my car, Austec it would be.

Sorry to hear of your problems

Have a read of this thread (www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=243085&f=152&h=0) in the Speed Six Engine section. I'm currently making the same decision myself. I would really recommend giving Paul at Austec a call, he is a very honest guy and has given me a lot of advice regarding my situation (unfortunately not quite as simple as 'usual' speed six problems). From what I have read and from my research I would be more than happy to get Austec to rebuild my engine (although I am not quite decided due to TVR Power giving me a very tempting quote).

Am I right in thinking that both give a year's warranty on the engine too? The prices also seem to be not as steep as we used to fear too!

All the above is very good advise but as we have seen on PH over the past few months there is no substitue for your own research. If I were in for a rebuild I would get a written quotation from the the usual suspects

Austec
TVR Craft and
TVR Power

Make sure it include a time estimate as well as cost to avoid the problems you have read about in the various threads e.s.p SXS's problem.. They will probably say they need to look at the engine before commiting which is fair enough but they should give you some guidance based on the type of damage- valves, cam wear etc. Each will want to caveate cost snd time-the degree of uncertainty will allow you to judge who is too busy, less credibl etc.
The point about the build date is if its an early car then I would look to TVR craft and Austec who are offering 'corrective' surgery.-if its later build car which has a later spec engine ( there is no official notification of change from TVR but lots of evidense that the Six has been modified over time) Then I would talk to TVR Power .You can then look at their options to upgrade the engine at the same time as rebuilding and end up with a much better deal-a newly rebuilt more powerfull Speed Six.( they do a 4 litre conversion and a Red Rose conversion which-if you really want to-can be combined at a cost) You will end up with a better car than you started with which can take the sting out of it all.

Good luck!

Anyone any idea if the rebuilt improved TVR power engines are likely to last longer - who knows maybe up to the 'normal' mileages of around 100k that you'd expect from a RV8?

If so I can see this as being a major resale factor in a few years.

No-one really knows.

I'd suggest they are more robust, how much, I've no idea.
I don't think anyone has clocked a significant mileage in one.

The RV8 is a very lazy engine too with low BHP/litre so will not be comparable.
I reckon the AJP is a good benchmark to aim for, so 50k before work is expected.

I have to say Dom knows his stuff and TVR Power know the SP6 engine well.

During my rebuild they also had several engines in with the same problem, namely a spun bearing due to it being too tight (#4 I think in my case).

Dom had got a new crank for mine and had sent it off somewhere to have it modified. I believe TVR Eng were also in the process of updating their drawings based on the number of occurrences.

Jon, like I told you in the email, best bet is Paul. He's done his mods to a few rebuilt engines now, and some are clocking some good miles I hear. So theres proof in engines running out there and doing their stuff.

Chalk and cheese.

But, I hasten to add, how can I compare it to an engine which was about to fail?

I can! Compared to how my Tam was, and this engine rocks.

OK, it’s like a 1L Metro at idle revs, and that’s to say there’s nothing there. I can drive off in the Missus’ Beemer Diesel in 1st or 2nd without throttle; this one can’t (not surprisingly)

From 2K revs onwards the engine just pulls without sign of stopping.

The Tam kind of had a gentle start and then burst from 4.5K and didn't stop 'till hitting the limiter.

And the engine noise?

As we were leaving the car park from last weekend’s jaunt to Dumfries, I quote a spectator as I blasted the engine to 6K in 1st, and let it fall off throttle to the “Give Way” sign:

“I want that one!”

Need I say more?

I think the truth is that you would not be disappointed with either of those two choices, both are passionate about the Marque, and engines, and both know how to fix them in a realistic timeframe and cost, better than anyone else out there...
