I am about to have my 6000mls service. I can't remember when I have to change to fully synthetic, but when they do which oil should I go for?

As a child I remember my father using Castrol in his Renault Alpine. I loved the smell of it!!

I asked a few people and they reccomend Castrol RS, is anyone using this? Is this the top of the line from Castrol? Is there anything better??

Your thoughts please...

It tells you when to go synthetic in the manual. I think 6k is the time. Ask the dealer what they use.

Isn't the dealer doing the 6,000 mile service?
Why not let them decide?
They are the experts after all.

Dealer who did first service on my T350 put wrong oil in. [full synthetic instead of semi]
Then, factory who did 2nd service overfilled it [to the brim of oil tank!!] Just shows you can't trust the 'experts'.

You never know, but I hope my dealer won't do the same. I know the dealers are generally in the know about these sort of things, but I was just looking for some independent advice. I was wondering if anyone was using castol and would reccomend it. Once you switch to castrol, apparently you should not switch back, so was deciding if it was worth making the move...

Sounds like great marketing hype

Checked with the factory last week and they are using Q8 5w 40, Said 0w 40 was to thin? TVR Power are recommending 10w 40's semi synthetic, also said 0w 40 was to thin?

I know Mobil 1 0/40 goes through mine quite quickly. The 15/50 Mobil Motorsport or Castrol are better from a consumption point of view.

I wish they would make their minds up!!
Sorry to be negative. I have only been in the TVR fold for a couple of years but in that time I think TVR have changed their recommended oils atleast 3 times. Funny how Mobil 1 0w-40w was what they specified 2 years ago,now it's too thin?? Then it was Carlube 0w-40w
and that was still not too thin, now my dealer is on Shell 5w-40w, which is now recomended. and suddenly 0w-40w is too thin. And TVR Power are sticking to semi-synthetics 10w-40w??????
Now it seems they are on Q8 oils???
How can TVR Power differ from TVR factory? surely they ought to be able to agree?
And I think if you ask opie oil man there is very little if any difference in viscosity between the 0w-40w and 5w-40w weight oils.

Sorry about that, It can't be that difficult to find the right oil surely!!!!
Personally I prefer the thicker fully synthetics like Mobil 1 15w-50w or equivelant.
P.S.
not entirely happy with the tetrosyl basic stuff used at my first service, don't fancy going to 6000miles on that stuff.

I guess the factory use the oil from the company who offers them the most?

Dom at Power told me that the fully synthetics are great for the track, but for road use they recommend a good quality semi-synth. On the basis that they build the engines I guess their view is as valid as most?
