Car died at the weekend (only got one derogatory comment from passing tt while waiting for the RAC).

Top marks to the RAC (freindly guy, used special tow rope so as not to damage the car, no buckles on the wheel ties).

Turned out to be dodgy Alternator which has killed the battery.

Anyone have an estimate of cost?

No, but are you sure its not the infamous 100A inline fuse which has gone? This causes the battery not the be charged by the alternator meaning dead battery in short order.

Have you called a dealer yet? Or take the alternator off yourself and have it reconditioned - it won't be that exotic.

Which one?

Apparently there are a few.

The one for the alternator is near the starter motor (under the air filter).

Three 100A I know of.

1) Under the airbox from the alternator
2) Behind the left wheel arch cover by the battery to the PAS (I think)
3) Inside the passenger footwell, behind the removable cover, to the internals

After my little episode a few weeks back I now keep a spare fuse in the glove box.

Well in the end it did turn out to be the 100a fuse.

All fixed but I seem to have been charged a fortune on labour. Whats a realistic number of hours to replace the battery and fuse link box?

My invoice is in the post

Fuse link is under the airbox so I'd say 1hr labour at the very worst. Same for the battery. In reality I'd expect the dealer to do both in an hour.

Was it a TVR dealer who misdiagnosed? If so I'd be knocking on the managers' door asking for my money back. Everyone in the business knows about these fuses and they've been around in TVRs since the Chimaera/Griffth (possibly before, my experience doesn't go back any further).

That's really bad customer relations if from a dealer!

Power did my alternator fuse FOC with a spare fuse thrown in.

It would have taken him only 10 minutes if we hadn't been chatting!

An hour is over the top-Last time my one under the airbox went it was while you wait at the dealer-about 30 minutes in all.I Know how to do it myself now -its not a big deal at all,and keep a couple of spares.
Suggest you call around for a few estimates on time and then go back to your garage and suggest they may have made a miscalculation.
