dropped my t350 to london tvr tonight for ?new alternator (car wouldnt start in tescos car park, AA called), managed to catch one of the staff (non mechanic) as he was just leaving and thought i'd mention the intermittent scrambling of the LCD display. He told me that well the worst case scenario would be an engine rebuild! but re-itterated it is a worse case scenario...and dont worry it's not as expensive as you think!!..so naturally i'm a little concerned, don't intend having a restful sleep tonight..me cars a '53, done about 8500 miles, or so the LCD says (prior to scrambling). Anyone have any ideas? or is it probably a loose fuse or somit??

Firstly I would wait to hear what the technician says tomorrow. You have had IMHO a bizarre diagnosis by a non-expert so if I were you I would have a good nights sleep tonight and not worry about rebuilds.

Post what the tecnician tells you-there are a lot of people on this site, including some who know the rebuild story a little to well who can help you.

As mentioned already, would hope this is nonsense - maybe thinking he's on commision for getting extra business? Not too long ago in the Porsche sections have been stories of dealers exploiting peoples fears to change parts that were fine (in Porker land it being RMS and "corroded disks" !)

yeh did cross my mind..though i try not to be too paranoid about being fleeced by dealers....still waiting for that call from the mechanic..anyone else have any experience of london tvr at kings cross?, i did read somewhere recently that they might be a bit on the pricier side?

Well they are in the centre of London so they aren't going to be cheap!

I agree with the other responses here, sounds more like the display needs the connections checking, or itself fixing for a few hundred quid - not an engine rebuild.

I'm sure there are plenty of simple reasons why it wouldn't start.

Must be more expensive than out of town dealers due high rent/rates and labour costs.
Having said that, managed to cut a deal with a large London Audi dealer for servicing and repairs to my everyday Audi - they discounted the labour and parts prices by almost 15% so there are deals out there.
Worth a try?

What from £100+ per hour to £85 per hour? How nice of them

Lets face it, all London main dealers are silly expensive, the further away from London you go, the more sensible the prices.

You are spot on with the labour rates!!
However, the Audi dealer in Maidstone was quoting £85 an hour and would not discount it.
As the London Audi dealer is next door to my office, much more convenient.
However, for the Tuscan, I always stick with Dream Machines in East Sussex.

ok, just spoke with london tvr, very helpful by the way, i explained what the chap told me last night concerning the possible rebuild due to the faulty display unit, this he found very amusing, so i couldn't but help laugh along with him..in relief more than anything! Anyway they've got me a new alternator (cost £195, warranty covers £145 of it) and they have to send the display unit back to blackpool for fixing, cost £45. In addition, the warranty is going to pay £50/hour for labour, so i'll cough up the remaining £30/hr for labour. (total charge for labour at london tvr £80/hr). So i'll get everything fixed for a total of £105!..not bad eh, and car ready to be picked up end of next week..cant wait. Thanks guys for your thoughts, can sleep peacefully tonight..
