Rattling - can't locate the source, any ideas??
Discussion
Hey folks.
There is some kind of rattling coming from my car at lows revs - sounds like glass rattle but I can't isolate the source for love nore money - Thought it might of been the exhaust for a second but it's not.
Is therer an known place to look for this kind of noise? Regular occurrence location? It’s seems to be getting louder aswell so I assume the vibrating is bringing something lose.
Thanks

Don't know the arangement underneath the T350: on the 'Gris, an engine mount had deteriorated, causing the assembly to drop to the passenger side of the car. This resulted in the exhaust and the HP oil feed elbow coming into contact with the tray under the car. On a ramp, check the edges for contact.
There was noticeable wear on both the exhaust and the elbow where it was in contact with the tray.

I had same metalic noise: Check Rear window is properly closing. Close it and try to lift it up if you have movement adjust the pin on the glass. Check that the rear splitter is not tapping on the petrol tank mine did so two 6" squares of 1/4" thick rubber one either side solved that problem. Check the exhaust is not touching around the area behind the back box on the out riggers mine did so adjustment of the threaded bar hanging down solved that problem. Try them and have a good look around my first port of call would be the exhaust mine was very metalic sounding but stopped as the car got hotter ? . Its very frustrating but keep plugging away you will find it....
PS try dropping the windows slightly it could be the window rails..Having said that check the bolts inside the door panels one of mine was loose and the washer was rattling

The nearside engine mount is an utter joke, it breaks so easily. My latest new one lasted 80 miles and I was driving it below 3000 rpm on a new engine!
You would think after nearly 7 years of trying they could design one that did not break so easily.

80 miles infers the component wasn't made properly or you have another problem. I've not needed any engine mounts (just an engine

)Thats correct. It is not made properly. I have had about 5 or 6 now over 6 years. My main Dealer says TVR have tried a few different designs, but the design and location(right by the exhaust) means that fail on a very regular basis. As for the latest one lasting 80 miles, at first I did not believe them, then I was speechless, then I laughed.
If you've had the engine out, then a new mount was probably fitted at the time, if not I bet it's currently broken....

What I mean is that to need that many are you sure there isn't something else wrong making your mountings go so often? The 80 miles one must have been made by Stevie Wonder or something for sure
I asked my dealer about my mountings at the 6k, 12k and while collecting post rebuild and they said the mountings were fine on mine. I do believe they're not exactly BMW/Audi quality materials but you seem to be getting through them a bit quickly!
must have been the pure and unadulterated grunt of my mighty Red Rose engine. Oh and now the grunt of my mighty Sagaris engine even when running in
Had many a discussion with my main dealer about it, and they simply say it's a rubbish part affected by the heat.
It's also not just my car, they say they regularly on most of the Speed 6 cars.
I also broke one on my Chim 500, maybe I just drive them too hard!

It’s doing my head in!!!!!!!!!!!!
I spent 2 hours last night looking like a total Wally trying to find the source of the rattle. Neighbours must think I’m balmy. Thought I had found the source of the problem with the boot catch being lose, moved the pin up but then the boot wouldn’t close. Managed to set that as tight as possible and that eliminated any movement from there. But, noise was still there. Also found that on of the screws sat behind the glass roof panel was losing - that must be it!!!! But no... noise is still there and getting worse. It seems to be echoing through the entire car when you drop the revs and the car 'shakes'
I think as mentioned on here that it does generally get less noisy when warm, but again I can't find any rattles outside the car exhaust
It's under warranty from TVR for another 6 months, then 12 months after that from the dealer - so can I just take it back and say "stop that fcuking rattling?
Also, the power steering is humming and changes noise when I move the wheel (it's no to bad though) any thoughts or this just normal? May have been something I missed initially.
Might even put out a reward for the first person to correctly guess the source of this dam rattle!!

You might be able to take it back under warranty.
I had an annoying squeek on mine again went away when warmed up, when the car went back for 1k service i asked dealer to find, when i picked the car up the noise was still there.
They said that the problem was the factory would only allocate them and pay them for 1 hours labour to locate the noise, which from memory i think TVR payed them something like £23 / hr.
They did actually spend about 4 hrs but couldnt find the source, i would have had to pay for their time from this point onwards. So this is the position your dealer will find themselves in.
Fine if they can locate it within the hour but as im sure your aware these things can take forever.
Fortunately shortly after my noise magically went away and hasnt been heard again.

That really is lucky.. Hope mine bl00dy does that!! Going to draft in some friends over the weekend and strategically place them around the car to see if we can pin point the little bugger of a rattle.
Have to say thought, although you do get these minor niggles, I’m almost enjoying trying to fix them. Does get frustrating, but it mine mind it’s better than a predicable car having no character (cough cough Porsche Boxter)
I have a squeek (metalic sounding) on mine. One problem I have found, was the linkage behind the gas pedal was just touching the pedal cover. (Easily fixed - just remove cover and file the offending edge) Didn't fix my squeek though, but I have noticed my squeek diasappears when the car is cold (eg after the aircon has been 10 mins ??) indicating its temperature related.
