Checking the owners manual of my new (to me) 350, I note the guidelines re maximum revs at certain oil temperatures.

below 60degC is no more than 4000 rpm - in all my driving today including a 80ish blast on the dual carriageway for several miles, the oil did not go above 60, and for most of the time was well below 60.

Does that mean I can never use the power available above 4K rpm?

OK I'm being a bit tongue in cheek here but I would be interested to know if other people have similar experiences of the S6 engine taking ages to get the oil up to temp. I know the senders can be a bit iffy but the readings seem sensible some of the time (eg when cold it reads the same as ambient temp near enough).

Any advice gratefully received... I would like to be able to use the full rpm range on some of my typical journeys during the week which are either 7 miles or 18 miles depending on where I'm going.....

Many thanks

Jerry

You have a statement about 4000rpm upto 60degrees? OK, for the Sagaris I use 2500 rpm/40 degrees, 3000rpm/50 degrees and over 50 degrees gradually use all the rev range you want. Even when you do that, you will find yourself changing up max at about 7k rpm really and only then relatively rarely. I may have touched 7600rpm once in the entire 15000 miles, but thats it.

Common wisdom is that constant speed motoring at (or near!) the national speed limit cools the sensor by perhaps 10 degrees. Next time you pull off the motorway/dual carriageway find somewhere to park up and watch the temperature go up rapidly!

Of course common wisdom could be wrong...

There have been several threads on this one - have a trawl through/search.
Most regard the oil temp as indicative - common sense would dictate warming up for a few minutes before setting off, and taking it easy as per your quoted rev/temps etc.
From my own experience, the reservoir is right at the front of the engine bay, and takes a fair draught around it when the car is on the go. As above, when on motorway or clear roads at consistent speed the oil temp drops. Messing around in town in low gear you'll see it remain high, and drop again quite quickly when you are on clear roads again.

Thanks all for the advice - I think I'll interpret the guidelines a bit liberally and just use common sense to decide how hard the engine can be driven. It seems to smoothen out quite noticeably when up to temp (I would guess at approx 50deg oil temp) so that's probably as good a guide re. if it's OK to rev it as anything.

Haven't really explored the upper rev range properly yet anyway so not sure whether it's somewhere you want to be visiting regularly or not - having just come from an RX8, I am probably still too much of the mindset that the more revs the better - the rotary in the 8 just felt better and better the faster it was spinning, right up to the limiter...

Cheers,

Jerry

You'll like it. lick

Good appetite for revs plus heaps faster than my friend's Rx8, which felt agile but in need of double the power to me.
