It's happened again.

This time I was driving along an heard an almighty bang. Everything seemed fine, oil, water, battery, power, no strange (-r than normal) noises, so carried on think it was a bit a debris hitting the underside.

20 miles later, battery was reading 12V; not good pulled up (at a pub silly) and she died soon after the fans kicked in.

Got recovered.

So, not checked yet but most likely the bang was the fuse blowing.

Problem is, this is the second time. First time was back in May. I was told that time it was stress related and it just broke...

As I have a spare fuse, I might just look at it tomorrow but just might get it recovered back to Power as the fuse blowing so loud means something maybe up.

Thoughts?

I asked a dealer to replace mine on a just-in-case basis, but it went 6 mths later - for the first time! Found screws holding it in not really tight, and some corrosion on mounting surfaces, which may both have contributed to heating up & blowing I think. Cleaned it all up really thoroughly myself and fitted new fuse smeared with vaseline on mounting points (NB not grease - a poor conductor - or WD40 which dries out & corrosion protection goes) Been fine for last 8,000m.

Just replaced the alternator fuse.

Not enough juice – 11.5V - to start her so I've got her on trickle charge.

Cross fingers!

While she was on charge, I spoke to Power and confirmed nothing untoward.

After an hour of charge she fired up no problem and read 13.1V. Job done.

With my spare fuse consumed and now that the rubber exhaust hangers are not doing their job anymore, I drove over to Power to get a spare fuse (56p plus VAT) and new hangers (£8.71 plus VAT each) which I will fit tomorrow (had enough mechanic's back for one day). Also gave the battery a well needed top up.

I caught Dom honing the valve seats on an SP6 head. Last time I was there he was washing a car! No end to this man's talents...

His Sag was being serviced ready for the Alps tour next week and he mentioned too that he had his fuse cleaned and re-fitted after he noticed the battery when charging was below 13V.

I'd noticed this too before the failure so maybe that is a sign to have it looked at.

Oh and he put the latest and greatest SP6 4L RR chip in and on the run back home - zero pinking! bounce

I have to say that that was pretty mean of them to charge 2 hours labour.
