What is the best/correct way to check the oil?

If i pull the car out of the garage and leave it to warm up to oil temp 40C when i check the oil its mid way between max and min ..... if i check it after a 45 minute drive it show's above max. I'm confused.

Hi Darren!
I think it's been said on here that the oil should be checked after a drive where oil is upto full temp. (e.g. 60)and immediately after turning the engine off.
I usually check it after i've been out for a good run and car is fully warmed up. Park the car and with engine still running, get out and open bonnet etc., then turn off engine and check oil.
Some people on here have even suggested checking it WITH the engine running!
The fact that yours is above max when fully warmed up sounds fine. The 40 degrees measurement doesn't sound warm enough to me and perhaps the fact that you're just letting it idle for that measurement is affecting the oil reading too.

Agree with replies - just to add, all engine builders will tell you it's not a good idea to let an engine warm up slowly while idling; greatly increases wear, and if done often it quickly contaminates the oil with petrol which increases wear further....
