Can you cause any problems by putting too much oil in. I checked the oil level when the car was cold the other day thinking i had mastered the difference between checking when warm and cold. Sadly i was mistaken and when i check the levels when the car was warm it was coming up an inch and a half over the Max mark. Is my car about to explode or will the excess oil just burn off?

I was under the impression the a engine with a dry sump just uses the oil it needs so it doesnt really matter if you overfill. I could be wrong though !

Well, had a similar problem after a factory service, won't go into it again but I ended up with too much oil. Two minute job to drain off if you're handy with spanners. Dealer wanted to charge me £125 for an oil change!!!!!!!!!!!
Was told by factory [if that means anything after all] that oil needs to be checked hot with engine running at tickover.
[when I had too much oil, it was blowing masses of blue smoke in left hand bends, as breather is on right of tank cus' numpty at factory filled to the brim]

However, just an inch or so extra (when hot) is no problem as the tank is very tall to allow for 45 degree angle of oil in tank on hard cornering.

Raced at Cadwell yesterday with 1" extra and max-g in long corners, no blue smoke

paperbag ...but I've just found a pool of oil under the air intake! The max mark is obviously just that, so I'm gravity-draining a pint off through a length of washer tube - will take an hour at this rate rolleyes
