Hi all

Wonder if you can help. My car has developed a small oil leak, nothing major just a drop every now and then and I am happy to monitor the situation and wait until the next service to have it sorted. To be sure I don't have any problems though I was going to buy some oil and top it up. My question is "Is there a certain type of oil I should be looking for?"

My reason for asking is that I remember my first TT used a lot of oil (they were known for it and they even gave you a zip up pouch to keep a bottle in the boot) but the oil I needed was a special type which, once when the light came on on the motorway, I found very difficult to find at the services.

Naturally I want to avoid a reoccurance of this in the TVR so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Also... if the oil does get low will there be a warning or something, I presume so but with TVRs you never know!!

Cheers - Rippers

Hi there,

I use Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W-50 in my T350. That's what my dealer recommends and uses at service time.

You might also find this thread useful www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=237643&f=13&h=0

These guys seem to be pretty well versed in most oils and I think there are a couple of T350 or at least Speed 6 examples on there.

Edited to add: Not sure how mixing different types of oils/manufacturers would work so maybe best to try and find out what is in it already so you can use the same. Hope this helps.

Edited again to add: In terms of oil level, I would not want to be waiting until the warning came up on the dash. It is recommended that the oil is checked VERY regularly in the Speed 6. I think the manual specifies every day actually! You need to do it on a level surface, with the engine fully warm and within one minute of switching off. Oh, and watch out when unscrewing the cap as its pretty easy to burn your arm on the engine!

Just had my 12k service - Dealer is currently using fully synthetic Motul 5w 40 (nice chaps at Dream Machines also give you a free 1 litre topup supply).

Check the oil every time you fill up with petrol as soon as you switch off the engine.

Thanks for the feedback, I will check with my dealer what oil they use.

Bit concerned by the regular checking... had the car since mid March and not checked the oil yet... bloody hell!

I still use Mobil 0W-40. This was the factory recommendation but most people have gone off it because it's relatively thin. Sure, it uses 1/2 litre per 1000 miles, but I like the feeling that the oil's getting around faster when the engine's cold. I also like the idea of topping up with nice fresh oil. I haven't heard of any problems with hot running with 0W-40. I suppose 0W-60 would be ideal.

yes Could not agree more, A twin pumped system with narrow oilways. Mobil 0-40 is the wise mans choice.

Is it not the case that at the Autocraft talk, the designer of the engine, Mr Melling, advised relatively thick mineral oil, (quite a common or garden grade and quite cheap, I think) for the speed six and not very thin, very expensive and very synthetic oil?
