noise level ???lb
Discussion
Croft Circuit doesn't test cars unless they consider the car to be a noise issue. All cars go out on track and the pit wall marshal makes a judgment. I have tracked at Croft on countless occasions both public days and HHC days. I have never known them pull a TVR for testing. I do the Db testing for the 'Loudest TVR' at BNG and other events and I can assure you that your car will be OK. Even with a sports exhaust the levels for the S6's are lower in real terms to the RV8's. The standard test at 1m / 45deg and steady at 3/4 rev range will come in at about 98Db-A. Db being a log scale means there's a long way between 98 and 101.
From what I have measured, fitting a sports exhausts on an S6 changes the quality of the sound but not the magnitude.
Hope this puts your mind at rest

Apart from mine

mine was tested at 117db with red rose and super sports exhaust. Its so loud that on the italian tunnel section of the furball, 107 tunnels in 3 hours, even I found the noise a little loud and I needed to start wearing foam ear bits for the longer tunnels!

last time i was at croft they tested every car as it made its way on to the track. altho only one failed and that was what looked like a ex fiesta zetec race car (then they stuffed exhuast with bog roll and empty cans of red bull???? not sure on that but it worked) tho they got kicked mid day for agressive driving. there was plenty of tvr on aswell so fingers crossed
You should bear in mind that the dB-A value is very dependant on the rules applied to gain the measurement. At BNG I do a standard test which conforms to the rules used by most but not all UK venues.
> 1 metre from the tail pipe and at 45 deg to the tail pipe
> Engine at normal temperature and held steady at 3/4 of available rev range
> Equipment set to indicate 'mode' value (not peak as most hand held units do)
If peak value is used the equipment will pick up on the slightest pop or bang and will react to rev changes as the driver attempts to hold 3/4 rev range. I would guess this could account for around 5 dB-A increase. (When taking readings at peak value the indicated value slowly raises over this range so I assume the equipment is detecting peaks and holding those values, after a minute or so the value will have increased by around 5dB-A)
At BNG I then ask that the driver demonstrates maximum values by retaining the 1m 45deg rule, setting the equipment to read peak value and asking the driver to make as much noise as possible.
The achievable increase for TVR's with standard or sports exhausts is between 12 and 22dB-A with the odd one achieving over 35dB-A increase from pops generated in a straight through decatted system. The maximum peak I have taken was from byff's AJP Cerbera, if I recall correctly it achieved a value of 140.3dB-A.
It is reasonable then to say if you have been tested using a simple hand held unit then your true normal value is likely to be up to 5dB-A less.
Oh and BTW, byff's Cerbera, with cats reinserted, has tracked at Croft.
