A few months back the power steering fluid was leaking and my dealer corrected this. However, this leak did not effect the actual steering. A week ago the power steering just suddenly stopped working so I headed home, although on the way home it suddenly started to work again. I checked for fluid leaks, although not the case. The next time I tried to use the car, no power steering. I drove a few miles in case it started up again, but no luck.

My questions are ; -

If no fluid leak (the level is between the min and max markings), could this be a simple problem (fuse or something) I could sort rather than another trip to the Dealer?

Will I cause any damage using the car without the power steering working?

All advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had a simlar issue, when the fuse blew it made contact every so often and worked below is what i put on the FAQ

one fix for no power steering (PAS): (I'm assuming that there is no power at the PAS pump here)
remove passenger wheel
remove battery cover panel
look for a red cable with a black plastic connector in the middle
remove tape and prise open cover
there is an 80 amp flat fuse in there (at this time I don't know where to get a replacement)
check that fuse is intact with continuity checker if dead replace
easy way to check if its working is start it up and as you turn to full lock it should make a noise.
if working turn off
replace cover and retape the connector back up
put battery cover panel back
put wheel back on
test it.

In the Owners Handbook fuse no35 is showing as 'master ignition'? I cant find any fuse with 'power steering' detailed? Sorry, I'm no expert, as you can tell! Do you have any further detail?

Also, if I use the car whilst faulty, will this cause any damage?

just checked my handbook, fuse 35 is master ignition, as it only takes 15 (30 max) mins to take wheel off and battery cover maybe check there, I spent hours trying to get upside down enough to check the fuse board, all I ended up from that was a painfull neck.
also can't imaging it would cause any damage apart from when parking, without pas its a suprisingly heavy car

Thanks david. Unfortunately I do not have the tools to do that. I was hoping a fuse problem. I'll have to drive it to my dealer. Know what you mean about heavy when parking. Thanks again.

on full lock is it possible to remove the cover, 10mil spanner i think, two on top and two underneath, still not much but is possible.

maybe better to go to dealer (im certain they can help shame its on a weekend!), perhaps have another look through the FAQ there may be something else you can look at?

As Mr Godfrey pointed out about the power steering but before you take your n/s front wheel off and the battery cover. Over ride the relay (thats at the front next to the oil
filler near side) if the system works then its either the relay (which is from a pug) or the 10amp fuse on the fuse board under the steering wheel No35 shown as the ignition management. This fuse controls the power steering relay. Happened to me took ages to find the problem.

Hope this helps somebody some day.

Before you do that make sure the the 80 amp fuse is not under the bonnet passenger side about half way down the engine bay as mine was.

When my PAS packed in it was the the fuse that was labeled as heater flap ( under steering wheel) that had blown. This was the ignition live feed the the PAS relay.

By the way if it is the the relay is at fault and you have a hard time tracking one down as I did I have a spare at home.
