Sagaris Clutch / Warranty?
Discussion
I have an 05 Sagaris with approx 10,500 miles on the clock which i purchased from a main dealer in June 2006. The car has a main dealer warranty and because i bought it from the main dealer i was told that the remainder of the original three year warranty would still be on the Car.
Had issues with engaging gears just lately which is not due to the clutch centre plate being worn out but the fingers on the pressure plate being faulty. The dealer that i got the car from has just told me that i will have to pay for the work as the clutch is not covered by the warranty due to it being a wear and tear item. I understand this if it was the centre plate that had worn out but surely the pressure plate being faulty is down to a manufacturing error.
Has anyone else had similair problems with the clutch and was it repaired under warranty or did they end up paying for it.
I know with the current TVR issues the warranty is probably not worth much anyway but would be interested if anyone else has had the same issue.
Thanks in advance.

My clutch had the exact same problem, although my car was not in warranty I complianed to my local dealer on the basis that surely a bl**dy clutch should not go in 10k, anyway I still had to pay for it, if it starts to look like you do have to pay I would recommend scouting around on here because I have read many threads that suggest independants have designed and now supply clutches that last...
good luck
It could be that the springs on the driven plate need re-tensioning. We have done this on a small number of cars now and the symptoms are 'dragging' of the clutch action and a difficulty in getting gears esp reverse. It still means dropping the gearbox out and splitting the clutch but it is virtually all time and no parts cost. Also to bear in mind that many manufacturers will have the clutch as an exclusion on warranty, did you buy the car new and if not do you know how it has been driven? We had a Mitsubishi Evo VI delivered at 5k miles which had a cooked clutch, it seems that a few standing starts are enough for them to fail! Hope that you get it sorted asap!
In my opinion the clutch in the sagaris is very poor in both design and fitting. Mine is now on the way out again and this will be the second one in 10k. I will not be fitting a replacement from AP/TVR but one of the improved designed ones from TVR carparts.

The clutch centre plate was definatly not worn or slipping it just gradually got harder and harder to engage the forward gears. I know reverse will always be the first to show signs of dragging and the TVRs that i have owned have always been a bit prone to the occasional grind even when going into second and then straight to reverse due to the lack of synchromesh on the reverse gear.
The clutch just slowly over a period of time become slightly harder and harder to engage all of the forward gears. Never grinding but needing slightly more pursuading than usual. In fact i never really noticed it to much because it happened over a period of time and i just adapted revs to engage smoothly. It was only when my business partner borrowed it that he noticed the differance as he only drives it every three months or so.
Anyway the bottom line is that i will have to pay for it which i am not overly stressed about but just wondered if anyone else had a similair problems.
My next question is that i have been quoted around £750 + VAT by my main dealer to get it replaced and as it is not a warranty item what would stop me going to an independant TVR specialist and having what i presume would be a far lower labour rate and total cost. Also how would this affect the remaining TVR warranty for the rest of the car if there is such a thing? I am guessing this would depend on my honesty and if they were ever told about it.
Also does anyone know of anywhere they would recommend that might do a good job based around the Kent and South East area if i was to consider getting it done privatly.
They have also already had the car two weeks and have said that it will be another two weeks before they can get around to doing the job.
Also should i get the slave cylinder done at the same time as i believe that it is inside the bellhousing? Do they replace the whole slave cylinder or just replace the seals?

I don't think you'll get it much cheaper - the parts are £400-£500. I would replace the slave cylinder/seals while you're in there as they tend to go as frequently as the clutch components.
My car has a new clutch everything, replaced 2 weeks ago by my dealer under extended warranty (the Autoprotect 'TVR factory approved' one). Seems my clutch friction material was v worn as well as some other probs. Dealer thinks the factory bolted the wrong clutch to my engine when it was back home last summer (clutch was never the same as the engine out/in). You may want to consider uprated parts - mine has the std TVR AP cltuch from TVR Power and the Clever Trevor release enhanced bearing.

Ahh the good old clutch issue
10500 is woeful, you should have got 18-20k miles out of the thing. As HHC says, one of the problems with the clutches not lasting long enough is the need for re-tensioning the spring, I had it done on mine after 6000 miles and it brought my clutch back to a correct standard. I know the clutch installations on the Sagaris were *not* good jobs and often bodged, even at the factory. Hey, the factory is gone, I can say all these things now.
I dont know what the clutch supply issues are currently like, but if there are problems around getting one just drop me a line and Ill source one for you. Alternatively go via the Indie route and get one of the "different" clutches that have been developed. When I changed my clutch as I was selling the car to Matt, DM got me an Autocraft clutch as they were quickest to send one. Have no idea if its any good, I hardly did any miles on it, but I think a few ppl have them now, but no idea how many miles ppl have been getting out of them.

I know that the clutch is a wear and tear item, but even so, there has to be an acceptable mileage within which the clutch should last, otherwise it's simply 'not fit for purpose'. Gonna have to check the small print on my new warranty...
Higher power cars obviously do less miles per clutch than shopping trolleys, but this is one area where the Warranty/Dealer/Manufacturer can just supply a sh*te component and get away with it with no comeback/claims!

After reading the above responses which are all greatly appreciated.
What should i do?
Play hard ball and refuse to pay and push for the warranty to pay for it or should i just pay up and look big?
I don't want to set a precedence that will mean that everyone has to pay for things that i believe should be covered by the manufacturers warranty.

Is there any mileage (no pun intended) in quoting Sale of Goods act, Not Fit for Purpose etc., even a quick phone call to Office of Fair Trading/Trading Standards/Citizens Advice for their point of view?
I'd play hard ball.. totally unacceptable for a 50K car to suffer from such early clutch failure..... not enough mileage for wear and tear to be the reason...manufacturing fault.. unreasonable to expect cutomer to pay.... dealer should be supporting my case with the warranty company...etc. etc.
Let them know how much bad PR this kind of issue will reflect on the quality of their After Sales service...they might not give a fig, some dealers don't. See if your local press might be interested in a piccie of you looking all upset and a quote from you....

Question is, who do you play hardball with? Its not really fair on most dealers who are also out of pocket. TVR is no more. The main people you could try it with will be hard to pin down. Lots of hassle and likely no payout.
Sometimes it isn't worth the hassle.

Agreed, my dealer has told me they cannot do anymore due to the money owed them by TVR. So I've just had to pay £275 for a new radiator for my 05 Saggy
but I will fit it myself. Alan
