Well I had my sagaris in for a few bits of work and unfortunately it has come back with a problem. That problem being I cannot start the f@?!ing thing. Excuse my language I am a little pissed off after the third day in a row of this. It had a very very slight idling problem before but now this is gone beyond a joke. It's the one thing I need right and that's obvious as I cannot be going on a 400 mile journey everytime I need to sort the idling.

It's a bit of a nightmare needing to hope to god that when you get in your car your not sure if it will start. It's worrying me because I sat in the lotus yesterday and had a feeling of calm and an alarming thought crossed my mind. I have never once thought the lotus going to die once I turned the key

It's basically a case of pray for it to start otherwise you could be sitting there for 5 minutes until she will kick into life. It's all to do with the damn idling not being set correctly. Is there anything at all I can do to set the idle higher myself? She's only kicking in at 600 at best and mostly 400. Whereas before when she was good (when she came back from the great racing green) she'd kick in about 950 and then at worst at 700 which would be enough to keep her alive and able to move off, which is obviously exactly what I want. Any suggestions? Before I throw it or myself in the river? nuts

guess you mean 100's rather than 1000's of rpm!!!

if you take the air box off you'll see a grub screw in the centre of the throttle butterflies just behind where the throttle cable comes through. give this a 1/4 turn and it will lift the idle. warning it's a bit sensitive and an b##ch to get just right.

Don't do it!! All that rain the rivers are running a bit deep!!

Have you given a dealer/technician a call to sort it?

Had similar problem, intermittent, but think it was due to weather / leaving the car out in pi$$ing rain overnight. Sensors a bit too sensitive. It did right itself - sorry not direct help here but something that did occur.

Jen it could well be as Richard suggests and the sensors playing up. That would be my first port of call without any other diagnostics.

Ill mail you.

Indeed i did my mistake, i was a bit flustered to be honest as i broke my phone throwing it against the dash when i cut out halfway out of my driveway onto the main road! banghead Then again it would be fun to have her idling at 7000 rpms

It should idle typically around 750rpm anyway, 950rpm is a bit high.

I had a similar problem when I cleaned the throttle bodies

1) Does it always start but idle low
2) Or sometimes not start at all

If it always starts but just idles low I would recommend what custard kid says just a slight adjustment of the centre grub screw on the throttle bodies, this adjusts the opening of all the butterflies, if you do this make sure its the centre one do not adjust any of the others..

If it sometimes does not start at all, is this after rain ?? If so check the passenger footwell for wetness, if its wet pull the carpet back and check there isn't an electrical component sitting in a puddle of water, if so strap it up, then sort the leak

good luck

Well now it's 50% of the time it will start and the other 50% will start for a second and die totally. See i preferre it to idle at 950 because when it was statng 98% of the time it woould either a. start and idle at 950 or b.start and idle at 750. There was always a differance of approx 200 depending if it wanted to start nice or not. Therefore now there's a problem as the 200 gap is still there but it will only start at 700 at best and alot lower - 400 at worst therefore dying on start up. I definitly want it back at idling at 950 as it ran perfect then. Plus as said i am at least 400 miles from the nearest dealer and the idle drops over time so if it's not set high then over 6000 miles it will drop way too much!

Hmmm. Not sure about that. I spoke to Hexham HC as my T350 has issues a few months ago where it was stalling in the mornings when cold just after starting. They reckoned that for a car with A/C that 950 was about right for the idle as it drops a touch when the A/C is switched on. That's for when the engine is hot though so maybe not as helpful for you if this is when engine is cold.

Racing Green have done exactly the same with mine. When I took it there it idled at ~750 when cold and ~950 when warm. After having had its major service, the cold idle rpm is down to about 500 so keeps on stalling. The car has to go back again to have some front end damage repaired so have asked them to put the idle speed back to where they found it!!

Oh no just to make it clear racing green were the ones who fixed it. Pre - 1000 mile service it was running dreadful. Then they got it spot on. But it needed to get some work done somewhere else and has now come back worse then it was pre - 1000. I want it back where racing green put it

money saving tip from hollowpockets - have a dealer talk you through the adjustment of the idle so you learn and in future won't have to make any long pointless trips to dealers.

living in aberdeen i do this, otherwise its a 200+ mile round trip every time i need something done.

iv replaced radiators, sensors, window mechanisms, lense covers for lights, engine mounts and nitrons. thumbup

Suggestions from hollowpockets & custard should work - it's very easy I've done it many times (but don't need to remove airbox).

Need a little 8mm spanner to release locknut on screw, just until the screw can be moved with an allen key. About 1/4 turn clockwise of the screw is probably all that's needed, then test before tighten fully (remove allen key first!).

This will work as long as the sensors etc are all working and set up as normal of course, which they should be.

Most times i have been in to collect the car is strange times so no mechanics around. I really don't think i would trust myself to do this ..... I try my best in life to stay away from medicine, maths and most of all mechanics as i will just blow the engine up nuts

OK but really is easy, and reversible - guess other option to save the long trip is any mechancially minded pals nearby that you might trust.

I am trying to work out if you are having trouble starting or you just have trouble keeping it ticking over without any throttle...

Seriously I would get yourself the software a lead and some advice on how to adjust the idle speed. You can initially plug a laptop in and establish if there are any problems according to the readings, you don't need to change anything just take a look.

Once your comfortable that there is no problems with the readings then you can adjust the idle very slightly....

seriously if your dealer is that far away I would say you need to have a go otherwise you are going to be making some annoying trips backwards and forwards

Funky,
Give Greg a ring at torqueflyte - he will talk you through or talk someone else through to assist. Is it really 400 miles to Ballygowan? Didnt know if you were aware, but nearly all the cars in Ireland go there they are tops.
We want the purple monster out for the track day!

Scotty ~ Trouble keeping it ticking over without throttle. That being said it dies so quickly that if you try throttle it hardly even registers! Your right i should geta software lead. How easy is this to setup?

Bobd ~ It's a 400 mile round trip to there alright! The reason i take it to the uk is becuase it's only another 30 miles or so driving heading over there!!! But your right to say get in contact, do you happen to have his email?
