Hi all

I have just arrived home after driving with no probs then all of sudden i come to traffic lights and DEAD. It display "POWER SYSTEM FAULT". While broken down right on traffic lights i jump start it and it splutters and missfires and i get 100 feet down the road and it dies again. Well it barley run to be fair. So i pull in to a cul de sac and check all fuses under drivers foot well. All ok. Check the one in the pass foot well that runs through a red thick lead. All ok!!!!!

The dash display is fine, all light up but just sounds like a totally flat battery, but that cant be right cause this all happens in secs. All this happened in a flash. Radio crackled, no speakers, engine missfires and then dead. All in 20 secs.

Now i have heard of a hidden fuse that others have had blow and break down but i cant remeber where it was!!!! I looked everywhere under torch light.

Any help would be great!!!! Pizza was stone cold by the time i got home, what a shit night!!!!!

Thanks all and hope you can help

Right

Firstly, re-check the foot-well on for a fracture - actually unbolt it. I had that - dropped the voltage and nearly caused a fire. secondly there is one under the air-box under the bonnet as well. Similar type. Not sure how to get to that but do a search on here and you find the instructions. Another possibility is the alternator not charging. Lastly it could possibly be a collapsed battery cell?

Most likely one of those 2 fuses i think

Hope that helps

Mine did the same.

100amp fuse under the airbox was the culprit. Only cost 80p but the connection needs to be secure otherwise it arcs and causes all sorts of electrical problems and then blows.

Once sorted it will be back to normal.....get your battery on charge asap so that you don't have to replace that as well through cell damage.

Good Luck

Well done guys!!!!

Just pulled the airbox off and found it blown. Typical TVR shoddy design. Can barley get ya fingers on it let alone change the bloody thing. At least i know what it is now though.

Just ordered the new fuses, got a couple of spares as well.

Cheers again all

Justyn,

Worth spending a minute extra making sure the contact surfaces are corrosion-free and scraped/sanded clean, then add smear of vaseline to the surfaces before tightening up (like on battery terminals) and tighten fairly tight. My new one failed when it had not been fitted tightly enough.

Actually guys its worth throwing your local Indie/Dealer an extra £100 come service time to make sure *all* or as many as poss of your contacts are clean, dry and corrosion free, esp water and oil temp ones, as an explicit check, not just part of regular service stuff.

Glad it's sorted, could point me in the right direction to buy some spare fuses myself?

TIA

Fantastic replies for what sounded a big problem. You can always rely on the guys on here to come up with the answers.
I'm going to print this off and keep in my glove compartment, along with a couple of those 100amp fuses.

Alternator to Starter motor fuse.

You would imagine all the fuses are in the fuse box. This is not the case.
There is a failsafe fuse between the Alternator and the starter motor which is under the air box.

Its an easy if slightly involved fix.

Remove the air box by undoing the two allen head bolts then unclip all the toggles. There are two clearly visible and one 'hidden' at the inlet side of the box between the third and forth inlet port. Its a bit fiddly to get to but you can release it using a large screwdriver. Pop the top of the box off the inlet ports then wriggle the top of the airbox forward.Once this is free you can then lift out the filter and then remove the bottom half of the airbox.

The fuse is in a black box on the red cable between the starter motor and the alternator

The fuse is 80 amps but its safe to replace with 100 amps if thats what you have to get you going.

We had to rig a flat blade 100 amp using spade connectors and some thick cable which needs to be well insulated with tape. This works untill you can get to your dealer

Test the fix before you replace the airbox

Spot on everyone!!!!!

I have just got in from the garage after fixing the prob. Dead easy. Took me an hour and a half first time. The instructions by sideways is SPOT ON!!!! done the cleaning and got some vaseline on the connections which does help for sure.

I will add to Sideways instructions that it is even easier if you remove the lower part of the airbox. Just 3 10mm bolts and its off and by god is that a million times easier.

Got some spares, and well happy!!!

I love you all. LOL
