Lining up the gearknob can be a real pain.
As a result of doing SUCH a good job tightening the small aluminium collar, I now can't loosen it to alow me to straighten up the gearstick "diagram".

However, for the princely sum of £3.19 Halfords sell a small box of assorted washers. I found that a single copper washer between the collar and knob resulted in 100% perfect alignment. It might not answer exactly the question you posed, but it does give you something to try.....

(Halfords also do a box of assorted autofuses, one of which now sits in the toolkit in my boot. Here's hoping its not the boot release fuse that fails first...!)

Good luck,
Neil

Edited to add: It has just struck me that I've assumed it was just the big metal ball that worked loose and not the entire gearstick.... that would really suck.
