Fans and fanning - help required
Discussion
Sat and watched the water temp go up and only one fan comes on at 95-96 degs. Is this normal? I let it idle but temp wouldn't rise above 98 so wasn't sure if second fan only cuts in after say 100 degs. If both SHOULD come on is there a quick fix/check? A fuse somewhere?
Thanks for any help

im an expert here after months of overheating gremlins last year.
under the airbox towards the rear of the cylinder head you will find the water temp sensor - first of all to check the fan does actually work and the wires are fine---- unplug the sensor and aslong as the ignition is on both fans will cut in automatically as a default mode at any temprature.
most likely outcome - they both spin and all appears fine, theres no use removing and cleaning the contacts on the sensor as it will just stop working again within a few weeks or a bit of rain, so buy 2 new sensors for £15 each, spanner the old one out and a new one in (20 mins as the airbox needs to come out to make room)
keep a spare somewhere handy as they seem to last no longer than 8 months from my experience ( driven daily in all weather conditions )
good luck

I recently had a problem of over heating and boiling over, the fans were working ok, but only stayed on for a short while, they went off for around 2 minutes, then came on again at aroune 103 degrees. Turned out it was the sensor, Cost of part was around a tenner, but with fitting cost was just over £100 +vat. But it cured the problem !Cheaper than a new rad too.

Sensor unplugged, ignition on and neither fan works. Will leave air box off 'till tomorrow. What happens when take the old sensor out? Do you get water pissing all over the place? Risk airlocks? Or is it simply a case of 'spannering the old one out and a new one in'?
Cheers

neither is working? try turning the engine on and unplugging it as at least the one which was working should have come on, there are two sensors in the cylinder head so make sure you unplug the one nearest the windscreen/rear of the car.
when unscrewing the old sensor park with the front of the car facing downhill on a slight slope and you will only get little water come out but never enough to cause a problem, just have the new one ready in your other hand to quickly throw in
edited to add : to see if the fan has siezed you could poke a screwdriver through the plastic cover and try turn the fan, if it spins freely the fan will be fine so just change the sensor, if it doesnt turn freely it will need the fan replaced.

OK clearer now. Both fans working fine when I unplug sensor with the engine running. Still not sure why this means sensor faulty, surely the reverse? Remember, mine is not an overheating problem as such, just I can't get 2nd fan on. I'll give the dealer a ring and see if there is some other idiosyncratic wiring issue. Tivs huh

when the sensor is unplugged it turns the fans on as an emergency mode to make sure nothing overheats as the ecu won't know how hot the water is.
the sensors are poop, but just replace it as both should come on before 98c, do it yourself and save yourself the £100+ bucks a dealer will charge.
