The fluid in the expansion tank seems to be disappearing. No obvious leaks, no gunge in the oil - but no water in the tank, despite topping it up.

Any suggestions? Thought it might be the clip on the hose at the bottom, but (a) it seems tight and dry, and (b) tried to get to it tonight with a screw driver (no other tools as I'm away) and nearly dislocated my bloody wrist.

Oh and the Shell Station I went to just now sells everything; beer, wine, eggs, milk, condoms..but no bloody anti-freeze!

Another beer I feel......

Well have an omelette, a feed of drink and get laid - you'll forget all about the antifreeze then.

Is it disappearing or hopefully just settling down to the level they all like to run at - about 6" down from the filler neck?

We've all learned to keep a check on it with modern technology - dipping in a wooden spoon handle rolleyes

If it isn't the excess being pushed out the cap (i.e. continues to fall fall fall) then its going somewhere (dur). Either you've got a slightly loose hose, a baby leak in the radiator.

How much water have you got through? If a tiny amount it may not be noticeable, if a lot then look at the oil. If the oil looks OK then it may still be getting out from a water jacket to the exhaust in the head. Obviously more costly than the first two (more common) possibilities.

Well, stranger and stranger. I topped it up yesterday, sat in traffic for 40 minutes hitting water temperatures of 97'ish but when I checked it this morning it hadn't lost any.

I've put in about 1.5 litres over the last few days; never had any problems before and have experienced the self leveling system! Tried the wooden spoon and the length of washer pipe tricks for checking levels.

I'll check when I get back to the car this evening. If it's still OK, maybe just an airlock in the system that's moved? If not, I guess it will just make the 24k service even more expensive....... That just leaves the re-build....
