Hi all,

after having had problems with my POD LCD (the notorious missing lines and no more backlight) I had some experiments with new LCD modules.

Finally, I succeeded with a new LCD module. woohoo

Here's a link to a PDF describing (only the successful) steps:

http://www.bestsharing.com/f/Jp26o287506 (new version available - see newer post)

Have fun,

Konrad

Hi Konrad.

That's very interesting - thanks for taking the time to make a pdf.

How much was the new display and did you get it from the manufacturers or via a component seller?

I'd be interested to see one of the newer design units (as I had fitted) also to see what the difference is.

Hi Richard,

I got the Varitronix display from Farnell in Germany; they also sell in the UK (they sell to companies only in Germany, though):

http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/Optoelectronics/LCD+Disp...

it is £72.19 (don't know whether with or without VAT confused ). I haven't seen any of the new LCD modules yet...

I have also tried an EDT Corp. EW24B50 (white on blue) LCD module, but that didn't work (it only lit all pixels at once).

Hmmmmmm you can get green, yellow, silver and blue displays as well as black and white.

Often thought blue would be easier to read and look cool.

Bit of DIY farting about may be called for here smash.

Having studied the Farnell data sheets for much too long since I found them I think it should be possible to get an exact replacement which won't require any soldering or fiddling with spacers and may even cost less than £75.

Also wondering why I had to wait 9 fecking weeks to get mine replaced at a cost (to the warranty boys) of £450.

Yes I'm bitter.

I've got the Who song running through my little brain - we won't be fooled again!

!
Surely it would be cheaper to just replace with new...Or am I missing something.

It was after the factory closed so no new ones available or being made.

I think that those of us with newer TVRs are going to have to become quite resourceful when it comes to replacing or repairing bits and pieces - especially electrical items.

Most of the £450 was labour.

A 2nd hand pod will cost you around £150 from a breaker.

Hi guys,

just found out why the display is thinner: no backlight weeping . I'll have to look for another one this weekend... for me it's still readable; the lady can't see a thing though redcard ...

Konrad,
are you sure it doesnt have a backlight? The Farnell page you linked to states that there is a LED backlight.

You will have to get the connector for the backlight mounted the correct way as the backlight will be polarity dependant.

The datasheet im looking at only has two pins for the backlight and shows three thickness

Hi hab1966,

I was sure I ordered the display with backlight. I surely connected the backlight power as it was before. The pins do exist... I was wondering about the display being thinner, but didn't worry any further banghead . Last night I took a look in the dark - no backlight. The illumination from the other LEDs could be enough - still the missus would like a backlighted LCD again...

The point is, the first LCD didn't work, the second one doesn't have a backlight - this is starting to pile up some electronics in my garage nuts

Sorry for the thread resurection.

Ive just been taking a look at the Farnell Catalogue. Part#118-3195 is clearly marked as a 'displays with LED backlighting'

I would try conencting the supply to the LED the other way around as it should work.

The other issue might be that you dont have enough volts across the LED backlight to illuminate it, but i cant find any details on the backlight used.

Hi hab1966,

in the past few days I had some discussions with Farnell. As it seems, they sent the wrong item (#118-3194 without backlight). I'll have the (hopefully) correct one on Monday in exchange. I hope to be done by the end of next week spin .

Most of the paperwork for the TÜV arrived also - soon I'll actually be driving instead of fixing all the niggles biglaugh .

I'd like to hear how you get on too. In the last few days I've lost all the lines accross the oil temp! So now I really need to get it sorted.

I'm trying to find the connectors but not getting much look, anyone know the farnell part numbers? I'm going to build a spare just in case mine gets the gremlins. smile

Just looking at the price reductions for quantity ordering, get 10 people interested and you could save £20. the price does not include the VAT

I received the replacement LCD and prepared it for fitment. Just then my battery had gone flat frown . I hope the accumate trickle charger will arrive today...

The Farnell part numbers are

LCD: 1183195
20-way straight header: 1107928
3-pin connector (remove the middle one when fitting): 1205983

You might try other LCDs, too. Make sure to read the datasheet to verify the voltages (I have one new display at home - worthless - wrong voltage specification).

Done and is looking great!

Farnell delivered the correct LCD module (with the backlight), the battery is recharged, and the description is updated:

POD LCD replacement.pdf (new link in newer post - sorry).

Have fun! smile
