Had a series of problems with cooling on the Tamora, and wonder if anyone has fitted an overide switch for the fans. Thanks for any advice.

The basic (old) cooling system shouldn't be giving a problem - we've spent ages in traffic jams in the south of France with air temperatures around 35C without any problems. We've since had the cooling mod (separate reservoir) and coolant temperatures are lower than before.

I assume that you've checked the usual things (fuses, relays, fan motors, air lock, etc)?

Agreed. Tell us more about what goes wrong with the cooling?

Someone on here has fitted an override switch though. Which leads to another question - does the fans being on solve your problem?

1st time it overheated, it was the temp. sensor not putting the fans on. Then it was the thermostat. Last time out it was boiling over in a traffic jam, no fans on. Got home, tried all fuses and relays, seemed OK, then 1 fan on, temp 98deg. I would just be happier if had the means to switch the fans on myself. Maybe I will get the new cooling system fitted.

I have what seems an intermittent problem with the cooling too. All the relays, switches etc. work, even boths fans spin in to life for a few seconds on there own occasionally...then die. I have fitted my own temporary on off switch by taking a wire with small spade connectors to the relay for the right hand fan.

Remove the yellow relay under the steering column and place each end of the bypass wire in to the north and south ports (four port relay, the LH fan has five ports) and the right hand fan comes on constantly. In heavy traffic in reasonable temparatures the engine runs at circa 78 to 84 degrees C, and most importantly no over heating.

She is currently going under the knife to get this resolved. But I hope this helps you out as a get by until it's sorted.

My Tamora always gets up to 98 as soon as it smells traffic and on a warm day it sometimes touches 100. It always makes me a bit nervous but it doesn't boil over. London TVR told me it's fine and that's pretty normal running temps. What do you guys think? Sorry for highjacking your thread

More or less like mine. Fans cut in somewhere upper 90's and immediately drops down to low 90's. Then back up to about 98 and the cycle starts again.

VERY hot days in VERY bad London traffic, then maybe about 100.

icb - if your car has boiled before you might want to replace the expansion cap. They weaken after 'blowing'. This might help keep temperatures consistent by ensuring good pressure in the system.

Obviously, if the fans are not coming on when they should something else is wrong, and I agree it is a good idea to be able to override them. Let us know if having the fans on enables the temperature to drop though.

Check for corroded terminals on the temperature sensor. Water travels down the cable onto the terminal and corrodes the terminal - this may explain why the fans aren't coming on at all.

Can't comment on the other reasons!

Mine does exactly the same. Never had a problem. (Touch wood!)
