Just a quick question:

When travelling forward at a pace in the region of greater than 110 Leptons the left hand targa panel really starts to scream.

My initial reaction was to think that it was beginning to lift and what I was hearing was air coming through a gap at the front.

Is this the case or is this the standard noise that people have refered to in the past and the panels are still comfortably in place?

TIA

Keep fiddling with it's position, I've got mine so that it's almost silent just a slight wind noise.... As far forward as possible works for my car but I guess their all different

Thanks. It's not such much the noise I'm worried about it's whether the noise is just buffering by the big protrusion on the roof or whether it is due to the panel lifting.

Does yours tighten front/rear or on the sides? If it's the former, then they are subject to lift at high velocity. Basically you need to make it a tighter fit.

It is the older mounts.

The trouble is that I do not know if it is lifting.

I know from posts on here that they are prone to do so at speed.

I also know from here that they make a lot of wind noise at speed.

What I am actually trying to acertain is whether the noise I am hearing is the wind noise people have been discussing or the panels lifting, as people have been discussing. biggrin

Basically, if someone who has wind problems at speed could let me know the kind of noises they are hearing it would be a great help wink

Why not find out for sure by doing a test run with a good brand of Duct Tape around the panels. Careful of the paint - it shouldn't damage it, but a good wax on the contact areas will help.

Good plan, and one I will have to revert to.

my left panel also does this and i have the former style of clips like yourself, tried fitting a new clip but it didnt help, wedged things in the gap to hold the panel still which helped a bit but once upto speeds you refer to, it moves then starts making noise again - my one lifts to the point i see daylight through the gap, duck tape over the front of the panel cured this upto 150mph but don't know beyond that, it doesn't look pretty either though so iv been driving slow till i can think of a solution.

a member on here did make up an additional clip for the panels which seemed to help him, i havent had a chance to try anything though.

do a search and you may find the pictures the other T350t owner took of his modified clips.

Thanks Hollow,

So basically, in your experience that sudden howling noise that appears once go over around 100 leptons is indicative of the panel beginning to lift?

TIA

Both my Targa tops lifted with a real thump and massive increase in wind noise at 125mph at RAF Cottesmore in june. The lids stayed on ok and the wind noise was the same all the way up to 147mph when I lifted.I think they need to be clamped at the front in the same way they are tightened down at the back rather than just pushed into a slot.Any ideas?Simon.

Hi All,
As some of you may be aware (see my post high speed horror). I also have had trouble with noisey roof panels in particular the passenger one which decided to divorce itself from my car at xxxmph.
Couldn't get hold of a panel at all, breakers, TVR power etc etc.
Eventually found a place called Newlun performance. It is located at Towcester about 70 miles from me. The workshops are full of TVR's Lotus etc they even have a Lambo in.
They also modify cars, spoilers, consoles, door cards etc. Pretty much anything in Glass and Carbon fibre. Thats what the Lambo was having done.
Anyway spoke to a man called Greg (top bloke), he said he could repair my old one, and considering I didn't have another option thats what I had done.
Good job I managed to retrieve it. whistle
He repaired the panel, bonded new fixing points in and an additional one on the front edge, new clips and seals also.
Resprayed both panels in Crystal Topaz and a silky black for the inside (carbon fibre side).
Now it is a much tighter seal with the extra clip on the front edge, and therefore quieter too.
I don't know for the life of me know why TVR didn't do this in the first place.
Considering we were doing the development work for TVR it didn't take him too long neither.
Told him I would be testing them out. hehe and have. The panels are now quieter at 130-140 than what they ever were at 70-80 before.
Still always have the fear they will do a James Bond on me though and guess I always will have.
All I can say is a big thumbup to Greg for his efforts.
This has been an good and effective repair. Was hoping for some good weather so I wouldn't need the roof, but we have had just a drop or two of rain recently. rolleyes
If anyone is interested give him a call to see what can be done. I know he is very busy at the minute, I wish I had it done when I first got the car 4 years ago.

Nice to hear you got sorted, and well by the sounds of it.

TVR did do something - they changed the fitments in 2004 to 2 front and 2 rear which fit in quite tightly (but its probably possible to improve with some side clips too).

so the glass fibre man in towcester has bonded tightenable clamps at the front of your panels to compliment the existing clamps at the back?simon.

Yes the fixings are the original ones, side and rear clips.
These are still there, with an additional one on the front edge of each panel.

My 2004 Targa had left panel whistling and water ingress at high speed from new. What I did was remove the two plates from the front of the panel and straighten them a little to provide more downforce on the panel and thus clamp it to the roof more securely. The roof takes more time to get back and you have to push it forward quite firmly but now its watertight and I get only a rushing noise at high speed - which is what you can expect from something that juts out into the airflow.

That's sounds like a good starting point ahead of spending money. Thanks.
