3000 miles of open road and open air in the Tam. Off to south of france next week to escape the rain !!!

Not sure though how I will get on searching for Super unleaded off the beaten track.

Anyone got any experience of this ?

As an experiment though I have just run through a tank of standard unleaded and couldnt see much difference. Suppose that would do if I got stuck.

Enjoy! Bonne Voyage!

I wish I was off to somewhere nice. Rainy England will have to do for the time being!

I had that problem last year in my 911 driving across Europe. I got to one garage with the fuel light on and they only had 92ron UL. I only put a splash in to get me by but the car ran flat as a pancake up some mountain roads. I think as long as you find 95ron then the odd tank should'nt hurt. Driving holidays in Europe are special so have a great trip!

I shouldn't worry. Run mine on std unleaded all the time. Never noticed any difference in mph or mpg.

In my experience there's more chance of finding super unleaded in France than there is in the UK. Even so, the Tamora should run on normal stuff (although mine does pink a bit, so I wouldn't cane it until higher octane's back in the tank).

Biggest problem you'll have at French petrol stations will be all the people asking about your car.

Enjoy the trip.

Would agree with Spoonman. Went to Dordogne earlier this year, and didnt come across a forecourt that didnt sell 98Ron, everything from small supermarkets with a petrol station, to a small station in a village. Just dont try and buy any between 12:30 and about 14:00, they all seem to close!!!

Enjoy your trip, I would love to head down that way again. Beats the crap weather here!

Yep, to concur with other posts, i did a trip to France a couple of years back in the Chim, and just the other week drove to Germany for the weekend in the T350, and there is definitely no shortage of 98RON petrol. Pretty much everywhere sells it. If you happened to find the one service station that doesn't sell it wink, i find normal unleaded OK - but i do get a bit of pinking under load. So, just put in 20 litres and then hunt out another station.

Enjoy the trip - and enjoy the attention. The French love exciting cars! smile

Lucky so and so! biggrin We did a trip to Cannes (including Monaco), Lake Maggiore in Italy and Grindelwald in Switzerland three years ago and a trip to the Dordogne last year. The Tamora behaved immaculately (as usual).

No trouble at all finding 98Ron in France - Italy was more difficult.

Have a great time!

I am so jealous! I love driving my tvr in france, and have been fortunate this year to do 2500 miles over there already in it. Everyone here is spot on, there really is no trouble getting 98 ron or higher, from decent brand names. if you have a tomtom you can download the poi's that represent the petrol stations in france, which means less stress, but apart from the issue of sometimes having a credit card not work, I have never had an issue.

As for attention, the french love a TVR, they never tire of talking to you about the car, and they will give you a healthy respect! As for the law, the police I have found love them too, just dont push your luck past 145 km/h on the motorway.

Either way, have a great time!

cheers

What a trip ! mostly sunshine (with a little rain to remind me of Blighty)

Why was I worried at all about petrol - it seems every petrol station in France sells 98.

Good call making some wooden ramps to get on and off the ferry though. The tam is only about 80mm off the deck at the front and altough a week in Dover would have been nice, it would have probably rained.

Would well recommned blasting around Europe and am planning a trip back in October.

I guess the only down side is bouncing around the pot-holed back lanes struggling to keep it on the road at 100K whilst being tailgated by a 2CV that can out-handle you !

How long/thick were the planks of wood that you used for the ferries?

Been on and off the Hull Zeebrugge and Rottredam ferries with Sagaris and T350 and the Portsmouth Bilbao ferry with a Tamora. No problems with any of them. They're all run on 95 RON unleaded too. Suggest that if you are worried you take a few bottles of Millers CVL to add to any poor qulaity petrol you may be unlucky enough to get.

Might not need ramps as a rule but my Tam is particurly low at the front. Ramps were just made of 2 x 4 rough sawn softwood with a taper at one end. length was from the front wheels to about 300mm longer than the front of the car. They fit nicely into the boot and are not very heavy either.
