Anyone got any experiences/recommendations - sizes/profiles/makes? Knackered a set of Goodyears over the weekend at Rockingham and I think I should invest in a set of spiders with track rubber. Thanks guys and gals!

Nope, reset them to 24psi after the first run - car was on the track 2 hours and those Goddyears had seen quite a few track hours before this session. Thinking of getting a new set of good road tyres for the OZs and buying a set of Spiders with track rubber as I am now addicted smile

I'd recommend Toyo R888. Been using them since April on the road and I've done atrack day at Bedford so far. Just having my diff done, and I've got Silverstone booked for the 21st. Great tyre and loads of grip, there a soft compound ,but seem to be lasting. I'm hoping to get three or four track days out of them and swop to Goodyear F1's for the winter(spare set of wheels).

Can you get the right profiles for 18" wheels or would I need 17" wheels to keep the rolling radius? Someone told me you have to go up to 45 profile for race rubber as opposed to the 35 that is standard on the 18" wheels.

The best road / trackday tyre is Pirelli P Zero Corsa by far.
I have used them on a Tuscan S for three years over 20 track days with two sets including road use. Now i have them on a Sagaris on the usual 18' Spiders. They give limpit type grip & will do over 12 laps around Silverstone GP & 2 consecutive laps around the Ring with ease safely!
I am at Silverstone on the 21st i will gladly take you out to show what a 'Sagaris' can really do on track with the right set up & tyres.
I also have a spare set!!!

They do the same profile 35 on R888, basically the same standard as any 18inch spiders sizes. The side walls are stiffer and don't give as much as F1's, a slightly bouncier ride on the road compared to normal tyres.

Well, I need a new set of road tyres for the OZs as well as a set of spiders and some track tyres smile

Thanks for the advice on the P Zeros I'll check them out.

Ah, it was your car I saw at Topcats today, in for the same work as mine just had (I collected mine this morning). Still taking it easy to bed things in (new brakes too) but the car feels much more torquey when you go through the revs now.

Your tyres looked close to slick!

Wayne,
I decided some time ago to do just that, bought my Works wheels and promptly fitted them with Toyo R888s. I now have and immaculate original set of spiders to fit to the car if it is ever sold - they are fitted with Dunlop SSR tyres but rarely used. The SSRs are an excellent track day tyre once warmed up, and genuinley better than the R888s and I suspect, the Corsas. Problem is they are no longer available. The R888s stay on the car as they are a better tyre for sprinting and hillclimbing than the SSR which the car is also used for. No problem in everyday use and not as bad in the wet as everyone seems to suggest.

I would suggest a tyre change first (on your original wheels) and I think you will be suprised with the mileage you'll get from them. Fitting R888s (not sure about Corsas) will aslo change the feel of the car as the tyre has a stiffer sidewall which will sharpen the cars steering a little (benefit on the Saga Thingy). smile

You may also want to introduce a little more negative camber front and rear to give that extra bit of rubber on the track when pressing hard. Standard set up the car rolls off its rubber at the front. The change does not unduely upset the car for the road - again IMHO. wink

edited to say Just read you profile and see your a Ducati man - funny how many TVR peolpe have Dukes (had mine 17 years now and love it.... just does not get enough use)

Just to clarify, is the general concensous that R888's aside (I'm not convinced that these tyres can disperse enough water in proper wet weather) the best all round road/track tyre for the Sag is the Good Year F1 or Pirelli P Zero Corsa ?? (Daftlad, I see you comments about the Dunlops but also that they are not available any more!).

Consider the car you drive has no driving aids, most owners will drive very carefully in proper wet weather. At appropriate road speeds, the R888 will move water adequately. I have done wet track days and the R888 tyres are far better than you would imagine.

The F1 is a very good tyre with excellent wet wether capability, but it has one failing for a road/track day tyre and that is the soft side wall. One warm enthusiastic track day will cost a front nearside tyre on a clockwise circuit, but then what is enthusiastic for one person is quite something else for others.wink Camber change will help but ultimately you will destroy the shoulder of the tyre.

I cannot comment on the Corsas but Shaun (Smith not the Sheep) will advise on them as an all-rounder.

Yokohama 048Rs are excellent tyre in the same vain as R888s, not sure about availablity in the sizes.

Given the Dunlop SSR caveat, I would and have, gone for R888s for a road and track tyre on both of the Sagari I have owned. No regrets - no nasty surprises.

If you're at Croft 19th September, both Shaun (I suspect) and I will be there for a chat. You'll be able to get a passenger ride in each car (I expect) to compare and see the tyre tyes at the end of a session to maybe assess the relative wear rates.

Look forward to discussing the options at Croft. I suspect I will be due tyres following that day and Oulton Park. Co-incidentally, just walked past an Evo FQ350 in our carpark with R888's on. They don't look like they offer much tread but I will keep an open mind. smile

It's Silverstone GP trackday run by Gold Track. Superbly run Trackday comparable to the HHC trackdays at Croft. The best bit though is walloping the German 'Luftwaffe' & the Italian 'Pizza boys'. Sometimes there is the odd race car testing, seriously an amazing array of exotica is usually there ranging from TVR's to Enzo's. Even if it's full it's worth just seeing the cars fly round. Also the girl that runs it Melindi is a 'Wild' chic & quite a character!
