I went to look at a Sag today with a friend of mine (for him not me) and after taking the car out for a good drive (it drove really well), we made sure that it was parked on level ground and stopped the car, wiped the dipstick and immediately checked the oil. It didn't even register on the dipstick eek

We hung around whilst it was topped up and I noticed that it took 2 litres to bring it up to max level.

I've told my mate to give it some serious thought as we don't know how long it has been run like that for. Assuming that it hasn't been low for too long, would this definitely have done damage to the engine and how quickly would you expect any associated problems to surface? (ie: would it be outside of a 12 months warranty).

Thanks

The engine holds 12 litres I beleive so on the plus side there was 10 in it!! Would'nt like to comment on whether any damage could have been done though. Did you discover the cause of leakage or was it low through natural useage?

I suppose it would come down to oil pressure, if the oil pressure was OK whilst driving all should be OK, even with low oil. But some bright spark will no doubt inform us were talking boswollocks, blabla that stuff they put in the shampoo (added boswollocks)so the advert goes.

it could well be fine ..or it could be the engine wasnt warm enough....you would be surprised at how hot the oil has to be in order to check it reliably.

Ive took ours for a spin around the block for a few miles, come back...nothing on the dipstick...put a litre in it and go out for a drive, come back (now FULLY warm) and its overfilled

what was the oil temp when you checked it? 60deg + ?

The temp was around 70 deg's and there was no signs of any oil leaks, so I can only assume natural usage. The oil pressure was fine throughout too, I think it dropped to 23/24 psi at idle around 700 rpm.

hard to say then really ...but being just below the dipstick (which it would be if 2L filled it up) isnt like "instant rebuild " required ...theres some tolerance in there of course.

it does show a lack of care on the owners part though...horses for courses really - if you have a choice of a few cars, similar price and spec and this one is the iffy one due to maintenance then ditch it...but if this is the "right one" on all but this thing then its tricky...what did the owner have to say about it...did you ask when the last time the oil was checked? ...Im sure any enthusiast owner who understands the car would know exactly when they last checked it !

...my other half drives our Saggy most days and she can tell me how long to the mile nearly that its gone since shes last checked it wink ...depending on whether its done 1K on the motorway...or 500miles round trip to a trackday, you kinda know when its going to need topping up....

What is said above pretty much captures it. I have to say I find the oil check after use the most tedious part of owning a S6 engined TVR.

From my experience I agree that if its only a couple of litres and the oil pressure was fine when hot and cold then there was still enough in the tank for the pump to be drawing from so it will be fine.

Thanks for that. The car was at a dealer and they said that they had literally just taken the car in, so who knows what the background is. All the servicing has been done on time and I have to say that even in its un-prepared state the car was immaculate.

I agree with the oil checking though, I personally check it on the Tuscan everytime I fill up with petrol - just because the car is usually pretty hot by then and its pretty much guaranteed to be a flat surface.
