I was going to Brands today with other Tiv owners and just as I was lining up in traffic to get my ticket the engine lost coolant and I just managed to pull to the side and stop quickly. Just got to wait for the garage to look into the cause but I was wondering.....

I have only owned the car for two days and this happens so do Tamora's/speed 6's have a known cooling problem and could this be associated with the low oil pressure at idle I had also experianced in heavy traffic the previous day. The oil pressure is fine when motoring along but drops to one bar at idle which the garage have tried to allay my fears and say its probably down to the oil pressure thingy? The readout warned of 3psi!

Is there any mod one can do to the fans to make them work all the time to make sure the coolant problem doesn't happen again?

I am looking for a confidence building answer here peeps please!!

I have what seems an intermittent problem with the cooling too. All the relays, switches etc. work, even boths fans spin in to life for a few seconds on there own occasionally...then die. I have fitted my own temporary on off switch by taking a wire with small spade connectors to the relay for the right hand fan.

Remove the yellow relay under the steering column and place each end of the bypass wire in to the north and south ports (four port relay, the LH fan has five ports) and the right hand fan comes on constantly. In heavy traffic in reasonable temparatures the engine runs at circa 78 to 84 degrees C, and most importantly no over heating.

Above is from Lordy in reply to my problems.I have had a new thermostat and temp. sensor fitted, but still overheats in jams. Fuses and relays OK. You can remove temp. connections and fans will run all the time. I'm taking mine into Power for a service so hopefully get it sorted.

3 psi oil pressure is extreamly low! if it is really at that level, ie not a sensor issue, then that is a problem!

mine stays at about 10-15psi at idle, although i also remember reading a thread (forgive me if i get this wrong smile)about best practice being to keep bliping the engine when in traffic to keep the pressure up and the oil circulating rather then hanging around and cooking.

Thanks for this....I will have a go at wiring this in or getting somebody better qualified than me to do it!

Don't both fans come on when the engine gets hot?

Also I was looking at the front of the car and I wouldn't be surprised if the number plate blocks cool air at idle...bit like a Griffiths one does?

Not that I'm aware of. Mine has been great even in a traffic jam in Monaco during the summer heat. The fans will come on intermittently as the temperature rises, but this is normal. I have had the cooling system mod fitted more recently (separate reservoir at the side of the engine bay), which drops the steady state coolant temperatures by almost 10 deg C, but even without the mod it shouldn't be a problem.

Where did you get the extra expansion tank - presumably it's the type fitted to late-model Tamoras and T350s? I've asked several places but can't find the parts.

I've been through a few reservoir caps (VW part), which are prone to burst seals (including once in a traffic jam in the south of France).

My expansion cap went, but that was just after a service and the dealer had overtightened it and cracked it. I also popped the headgasket, but that was more down to some other weakness which transpired on the back straight at Snetterton - the car didn't overheat though.

I've sat in nasty traffic jams in 35deg heat (before and after the above event) with no probs. As has been said, so long as the fans come on and stay on then the water temp drops down again.

The extra expansion tank was fitted to 2005 cars on (I think), some have had it retrofitted. Allows a bit more expansion space for the coolant - most cars spit some out of the expansion cap under pressure, but in theory this isn't deadly - just annoying to have to keep checking it with a wooden spoon.

I have to say despite my crappy day with the car yesterday Dream machines have really been excellent.....they fixed my car (changed the thermostat and temp sensor) and returned it to my house within 24hours of it breaking so full marks for customers service. And I found the exige S mighty fast!

I am going to remove my front number plate and get a stick on one and see if this changes the running temp....it will also look well hard at the front I hope!

Unfortunately, the mod was done by Heath at the factory 8 months or so before it closed and so this avenue isn't open any more. However, I'm sure Heath would be able to help so email me at home if you'd like his contact number (don't have it here).
