I drove the T350 back from Dorset in the early hours of the morning, had a little sleep and got up to come to work, was driving onto the industrial estate a little 'enthusiastically' when all of a sudden I had a Volvo with lots of flashing lights on my rear, I don't know where he came from but he must have been flying! Anyway before he gave me the usual lecture, I owned up and said it’s a fair cop I was speeding but as I'm late for work, now what happened next was quite strange and not like any other time I’ve encountered the traffic police. He said "yes you were going a bit quick and there isn't any excuse for accelerating like that but I want to speak to you about your windows" Well this is strange I thought? He didn't want to give me a lecture about speeding, didn't want to know why I had pops, bangs & flames coming out of the back? Just wanted to talk to me about my windows! Anyway he tested my windows and the drivers side only lets in 34% of light and the passenger 20% eek Had a really interesting (and civilised) chat with the guy, he was saying that the drivers window you can get a fine and the passenger side 3 points and they get could impound the car, more worrying though was he said if you had an accident its another way of the insurance company refusing to payout! He gave me a ticket to get the film off the car within seven days but told me to try and get it off today because another copper may impound the car and give me a fine, he gave me the ticket and said your late so you better get going and remember to lift the lead foot off a bit.

What a top bloke, total respect for him for not treating me like a 17 yr old chav in a saxo! So PC Gurney you restored my faith in traffic police again and I will heed your warning and drive more sedately in the future.

To add to this praise of some decent traffic policing...

Was driving home around the M25 on Sunday evening, not long past clacket lane services, and all the traffic was bunched up. All lanes were going about the same speed - about 60. I'm in the outside lane, and this police car comes weaving through the traffic, gets about 5 cars in front of me, and pulls the car in front of him over.

At this point a gap opens up in the middle lane so i move over, and can now see that there was no one in the outside lane infront of this car - so he was presumably being pulled for being a muppet and holding up all the traffic smileclap

This made me happy - as this is one of my big time pet hates! People sitting in the outside lane (or middle lane) oblivious to the cars queuing up behind them! Use your eyes and mirrors!!

Still didn't quite make it home for the start of Top Gear - but thanks Mr Policeman for trying!! wink

Yes, I saw quite a few of these road hogging muppets on my journey, the great thing was they were the so called 'professional' drivers, taxi's and coaches!

Is your windscreen dark? Or was the problem with the side and rear windows?

It was the side windows, the drivers side let in 34% light and the passenger side let in 20% eek

Why is that a problem? I thought the only legal requirement was to have a clear windscreen. Maybe something's changed recently? He must be pulling over a lot of 4x4s...

As far as I know its always been the windscreen and two front windows, he did say it will change to the backscreen soon as well.

the law changed a while ago in relation to the amount of light permittable through front and side windows... i believe and don't quote me on this but the front side windows ie driver and front passenger had to allow a minimum of 40% light through where as the rear windows and back screen were allowed to be 25%, it's well worth checking the exact requirements as it is an endorsable offence and the seizure falls under S.165 which basically means driving otherwise in accordance with your insurance but this is at the discretion of the officer carrying out the stop!

S.165 was designed to stop people driving with no insurance but covers those driving otherwise in accordance as well which excessive window tinting is included within!

i hope that makes it a little clearer (sorry poor pun)

I trust when you say seven days you are referring to your docs cos if he gave you a vdrs you have 14 days to sort the tints! Your docs is the only thing you have to do in seven days.

Mmm thats funny, I just looked at the ticket and it says 14 days to produce the signed off ticket at Rayleigh ticket office, the officer told me I have 7 days to produce the car at the local traffic station and they will sign it off rather than making me go to an MOT testing station and paying for a garage to sign the ticket off.

Slightly O/T but friends of mine left Fort Augustus after a week in Scotland last saturday and got pulled in their 4x4 by the police. Got told to remove the window tints or get a fine, they managed to peel it off and continue.

Must be a local arrangement as I have never heard that before.

Yep, just been to station and another officer had a look and a good chat about the car, it wasn't really an official ticket just one for me to get it done sharpish and show them done the local station.
