My experience is that as long as you don't get a spark when reconnecting the new battery you should be ok.
However, I changed my battery, got a spark and screwed the ECU up! It had to be sent away to be reset.
I'm pretty sure that I connected the terminals up in the wrong order, which caused the spark.

I have a vague memory from after I changed mine, that isn't there supposed to be tiny back up battery to stop that- or have I got a bum steer???

Please feel free to challenge, confirm or just rip the piss - 'cos I know some of you will anyway...

When reconnecting put the positive on first and then the negative, that way you won't get a spark.

..caught me by surprise. Does this mean the mileage on the dash can be reset to zero?

Yep yes if I had done this, then I wouldn't have ended up with a duff ECU.

Behind the ns front wheel. Access by removing the wheel & a panel in the wheel arch.
Double jointed dwarves with forearms like popeye excel at this job....

Here we go

Passenger wheel off

Battery box open (two screws and tie wrap)

Got to be the most stupid place they could have put it though.

The 'cover' is useless in terms of preventing mud/water/snow etc. getting in and there is a main fuse dangling down in front of the battery.

I'd much prefer it if they'd made the cover bit part of the passenger footwell as in Chims 'n' Griffs.

No mastick needed on minesmile,
but neoprene sponge would work well on the back edge of all the access panels, making it a doddle to remove them
