Do T350 Dipped Headlights switch off on Main Beam?

Just about to fix some HID's onto my T35's dipped headlights as the standards are pants, but noticed when I switch onto main meam the dipped headlights go off!
When the HIDS are fitted, this means that if I am on dipped headlights they will turn off which will make the HID's pretty useless. Is this normal? and if so, is there a way of making the dipped headlights come on as well as the main beam to have both the HID's and main beam lighting the whole road up.
