POD light brightness values

What values do people have their POD light brightness set to? I find that only 98%, 99% and 100% are of any use in the dark!
Having recently just suffered a POD failure - FRAM and RTC error coupled with lost mileage, Im getting annoyed at the crap electronics and seriously thinking about re-designing the POD myself. The only thing stopping me is I dont know whether the odo circuit needs to be certified or meet any standards. Though given the ease at which mine suffered complete memory loss, i cant believe the TVR meets any standards/approvals.
Before i start to look into this, has anybody fitted a different type 'dash' to their cars, possibly a Stack unit?
